INT. BLACK HAT'S ROOM. NIGHT. A hacker types away at the back-lit keys of the computer keyboard. He has two monitors, one of which is playing Japanese Hentai. He turns down his speakers and looks up to the terminal window on the screen. The Black Hat hacker types a few extra keys and pauses. The terminal window replies with copious amount of green text on its black background. The hacker sits back. Though his face is never entirely visible, we see a smug smile. The camera enters the screen, triggering a CG animation of computers being infected on a network. Opening credits. INT. SETH'S TOWN HOME. DAY. Seth is in bed. The alarm goes off, and is met by a thwack of the hand. Seth cleans up in the washroom, and we see that he has breasts. He puts on a chest binder, followed by a shirt. Seth walks down the stairs to the main floor of his town home, grabs a sheet from the laser printer as it finishes printing and posts it on the fridge. The camera quicky sees an article about the Meteo botnet. His roommate is also in the kitchen, preparing some eggs. Seth grabs a bowl of cereal and gets milk from the fridge. SETH Morning. Seth drinks from the milk carton before then pouring the contents into the cereal bowl. ROOMMATE Morning. How was the party last night? SETH I didn't end up going. I still had some stuff to finish for the organic chem assignment. EXT. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. Seth gets off of a city bus onto university campus. He walks past a sign that welcomes him to "Canada's University." Caption "Ottawa, Ontario, Canada" INT. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. Seth puts sugar in a cup of coffee. He looks around to the other students. JINKS Seth Seth Seth! SETH (Unenthused) Oh hey Jinks. JINKS So I tried hacking that one-two-seven dot whatever IP address you gave me yesterday? SETH (Still unenthused) Find anything interesting? Jinks pulls a piece of crumpled news article from a website out of his pocket. JINKS Yeah! Check this out! It was an ATM! Seth grabs the crumpled piece so that its not so close to his face and reads it. JINKS It spewed twenties randomly on the ground somewhere in hick-town Saskatchewan. That was me! SETH You couldn't of hacked anything with that address. It loops back to your... Seth looks up to the clock on a wall. Seth looks back down to his watch. SETH ...localhost. Jinks, my class is about to start. I have to go. JINKS Wait, isn't today Thursday? I thought your class was last period. Seth's eyes widen. SETH Oh shit you're right. See you later! Seth quickly takes a last gulp of his coffee and throws the cup in the garbage. He heads for nearby doors and exits. JINKS Enjoy your last two minutes of class? INT. UNIVERSITY CLASS #1. Seth enters the class, careful to close the door quietly. PROFESSOR So you can see that two's complement is the more efficient - The professor stops talking and looks at the new arrival. Seth mouths an apology. The professor faces back the class and resumes. Seth moves to a seat at the back of the class to a seat beside Gabriel. Gabriel is playing with his Nintendo DS. SETH (whisper) Hey Gabriel. Gabriel does not look up, and continues focusing on his game. GABRIEL (whisper) You're late. Class is almost over. SETH (whisper) I know, I know. I screwed up the times again. Miss anything? GABRIEL (whisper) Just stuff you already know. Seth looks down to Kerstin, a girl in the front row. SETH (whisper) She been here the whole time? Gabriel still doesn't look up. GABRIEL (whisper) Kerstin's always here the whole time. Are you finally going to man up Seth and talk to that American import? Seth squints his eyes and pushes his head forward as if internally debating whether to talk to Kerstin. The professor continues on talking. PROFESSOR Be careful though, because there is a distinction between using arrays and pointers. If we - The teacher looks up. The students are putting their notebooks in their bags. He looks down at his watch. PROFESSOR Alright, it looks like we're out of time. Don't forget that assignment four is due next Thursday! Gabriel looks to Seth. GABRIEL Are we still on for beers after class? SETH You know it. INT. CAMPUS BAR. Seth looks out the window, to the students walking in and out of the nearby library. Gabriel sits down, and slides a beer over to Seth. SETH Thanks. GABRIEL You've got that look again. What's on your mind? SETH Oh, just thinking about how university is all quickly coming to a close. GABRIEL What is there to miss? Seth grabs his laptop from his bag and opens it up. Gabriel does the same. They turn them on. SETH All the parties for one. The stupid shit we've done. GABRIEL Like when we fed the hamster weed? SETH Yeah. Or like when we made roadblocks with the trees people were throwing out at Christmas. Our friends are moving away Gab, and once they're gone, that stuff's over. GABRIEL I think you're making too much out of it. We're not dead yet. Seth looks at Gabriel for a pensive moment, and then to his screen. SETH Maybe. Anyways, on a more positive note, let's see what kind of catch we have today. GABRIEL Way ahead of you. The camera follows from Gabriel's laptop to the local wifi repeater. There are sounds of data chatter. White flash - camera follows down ethernet wires. White flash - a router over to a computer that's in a busy classroom. GABRIEL Jackpot. Looks like a prof's slides for class. And shit dude - its being accessed right now. Seth moves to look over Gabriel's shoulder. GABRIEL Shall I? INT. UNIVERSITY CLASS #2. The professor presents slides on the genesis of sedimentary rocks. He moves on to the next slide on the laptop that Gabriel had gained access, and the students erupt in laughter. The professor looks back, and sees a single repeating video clip of a bug-eyed hamster giving a very human-like look of surprise. Beneath the video is the short caption "Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow. -Mark Twain" INT. CAMPUS BAR. Seth and Gabriel are still drinking their beers. Gabriel has the slide with the hamster video visible on his laptop screen. He closes it. SETH I don't know what I want to do. I don't want to leave university yet. GABRIEL So get a master's. SETH Yeah but... then I miss out on the hot first years, and to be honest - I kind of want a second degree in computer engineering. GABRIEL Half those first year girls are 17 dude. SETH I was kind of kidding about that. Mmm - got a guy here. Seth was looking through computer files, and opened up a powerpoint file. One of the slides contains a pie chart presenting the break down of the last midterm. Seth changes the caption "Failed Midterm" to "Sucked Ass." GABRIEL So what if you did go for computer engineering? How many classes would you need to take? SETH About two years worth. Gabriel finishes his drink. GABRIEL That's quite a bit Seth. Keith's again? SETH Sure! INT. UNIVERSITY HALLWAY. Seth and Gabriel walk down the bustling halls. SETH I think I'm going to ask her out. GABRIEL Who? Kerstin? SETH Yeah. Think you could be my wingman on this? Gabriel stops walking and turns to Seth. GABRIEL Alright, how about this: I'll invite her to tomorrow's hackfest. There'll be enough people there so that it's not too awkward, but its private enough so you two have the chance to chat it up. SETH She'll say no. GABREL If it's you inviting her, yeah probably. But I've worked with her on projects before and I know that she'd be interested in the kind of stuff we do. SETH Mrmm... GABRIEL C'mon. You just asked me to help you. This is me helping you. All you have to do is to say yes. SETH Yeah, alright. GABRIEL Good man. INT. CITY BUS. SUNSET. Seth is travelling on the bus. There's the chime of a new received text message. Seth takes his phone out of his pocket. GABRIEL (text message) I asked Kerstin out 4 U. She's busy 2morrow nite. Sry bud. Seth looks up. He lets out a small sigh and puts away the cellphone. INT. SETH'S APPARTMENT. NIGHT. Seth walks through the door. In the washroom, he takes off his binder and rubs his sides in pain. Walking back to the living room, he sees his roomate play some variant of Guitar Hero. ROOMMATE You ask her out? SETH (Dissapointed) Yeah. ROOMMATE Didn't pan out eh? Hey, you want to play for a bit? Seth nods and approaches the television. His roommate hands him a plastic guitar, and the two play off. INT. SETH'S APPARTMENT. DAY. Seth wakes up. He looks over to the clock - it's 2:33PM. SETH Oh shit. Seth jumps out of bed. EXT. RESIDENTIAL STREET. SUNSET. Seth rides is bike up to a house. He places the bike on the side and walks in. INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. Seth walks down the stairs. Old system motherboards serve as wall decorations. There's a large server, and a video stream projected to the wall. Gabriel, Jinks, Eric, and a few others are there, all with open laptops. SETH Hey guys! Eric - I like the new wall deco. ERIC Thanks! I used parts from servers that my work was throwing out. Gabriel hands Seth a beer. GABRIEL Hey Seth! We're watching the new Binary Phunksters episode. Seth sits down and looks up to the video. EXT. TORONTO'S STREETS. DAY. i0 and Flow, the hosts of Binary Phunksters, walk down a busy Toronto sidewalk with a laptop in hand. i0 passes by an unattended car parked on the side of the road. I0 We've found another one here. I can now connect to the Bluetooth enabled so-called smart car, and this time, we'll unlock it. Flow types a few keystrokes in the terminal window on his laptop screen. FLOW So we're now connected to the car aaaaaand... The car unlocks by itself. FLOW There we go. I0 All this because they didn't change their Bluetooth passkey from the default. Remember folks: if its on default... I0 & FLOW (In unison) ...its as good as hacked. FLOW Just ask Paris Hilton. See you in two weeks! INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. NIGHT. The end credits for Binary Phunksters come on. A female text-to-speech voices comes on. FEMALE VOICE Next on rootTV, a talk from Notacon. Seth Hardy on "Online Communities and the Politics of DDoS." ATTENDEE I'll get another beer. The intro sequence to the video starts. The doorbell to Eric's house rings. ERIC Were we expecting anyone else? SETH I didn't think so. I'll go see who it is. Seth walks up the stairs and opens the door. It's Kerstin. SETH Kerstin? KERSTIN (shy) Hey. Apparently there's a bit of a geek out going on here tonight? SETH Yeah, come on in. Seth walks down the top stairs with Kerstin. SETH Gab told me you were invited, but I thought he said you had something happening tonight. KERSTIN My birthday party. SETH Oh. They reach the bottom of the stairs. The projected talk from NOTACON is still running, albeit muted. SETH Hey guys. This is Kerstin, and she skipped her own birthday party to be here. ERIC You'd rather hang out with strangers on your bday? Harsh. Happy birthday. JINKS Yeah, happy birthday. KERSTIN Thanks, but its next week. Tonight was just the party. Seth looks around the room. SETH Okay, well this is Gabriel, who you already know. This here is Eric. Seth moves around the room. SETH That's Jinks. Then there's Dave, Pat, Greg, and I'm Seth. Kerstin nods in acknowledgement. ERIC Alright, are we ready? SETH I think so. Kerstin takes her laptop out of her bag. Dave presents her with a can. DAVE Beer? KERSTIN Sure, thanks. Eric unmutes the NOTACON talk. CGG. NOTACON TALK. Starts from 9:30 in the talk "Online Communities and the Politics of DDoS" SETH HARDY Generally how a botnet will work is that someone will use a scanner to find vulnerabilities, generally a Windows vulnerability, and it will compromise that machine and it will bring that machine onto IRC onto a particular control channel. And then they can go onto that channel in the IRC server and they just have to type in one command and all the zombies will immediately launch an attack against an infected party. So its just remote control software where you can get tens, hundreds, thousands of machines at once. INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. The youths are at their laptops as the video plays. A few are paying attention. Seth grabs another can of beer and opens it. CGG. NOTACON TALK. A segment from Bruce Potter's talk "Finding Bad Guys can be Fun" airs. Segment starts from 14:30 in. BRUCE POTTER So on the right hand side we have general attacks. Virus, worms - what we've come to know and love. It's interesting... I was talking with some guy at a fairly large company and we're trying to tell him "you know what, we really got to be worried about the worm problem that we're having... this is like 2003/2004..." And he's like "you know what, that's bullshit." And I'm like, oh I'm not getting this job. "Why is that?" "Because when I get hit by a worm, so do all my competitors. And at the end of the day, if they're hit and they're down, who the hell cares?" INT. ERIC'S BASEMENT. Kerstin types away at a terminal window. She's within an aMSN session. CGG. NOTACON TALK. A segment from Ultra Laser's talk "stop clicking those email attachments mom." Starting from 5:15. ULTRA LASER I'm going to start off by saying the AV industry is doomed. Has anyone here heard of "antivirus XP 2009"? *laughs* Yeah, its a great product. Costs $50, then goes away. Don't use that. The AV industry is doomed because all you have to do is take a malicious executable, rename it antivirus, and not only will people run it, they will pay you money to run it. EXT. ERIC'S PATIO. NIGHT. All of the attendees of the hackfest are outside. They are speaking loudly due to their inebriation. Eric is talking to Kerstin. ERIC Everyone bashes on Javascript, because Microsoft messed things up with JScript. But what's out there now is pretty awesome, especially when there's stuff like JSON- Dave is talking to the others, except for Greg. He draws a square wave into the air with his finger. DAVE So we've got the signal showing on the oscillator, and the professor like "this is the clock." This dude then raises up his hand and goes, completely serious, "where does it show the time?" PAT It was like that in my classes at La Cite too. No one knew what they were doing. Greg walks up to Seth. GREG We're going for a bit of 420. Want to join? EXT. PARK BENCH. NIGHT. Greg, Gabriel, Kerstin and Seth are on a park bench. Greg takes a deep puff from a joint and passes it to Seth. KERSTIN So anyways, their IT department said I "hacked" it and started to become paranoid. Everything became my fault, whether it was greater latency or a server crash. It was so stupid. They were saying that they were going to expel me. Seth blinks, as if to maintain focus. Kerstin takes a swig from a coke can. She makes a grimace as she gulps it down. Seth passes the joint to Kerstin, but she shakes her head. Seth passes the joint to Gabriel. KERSTIN So when my dad was shipped to the embassy in Ottawa, he suggested that come with him. I left the university in Vienna and became a student here. SETH What's with the deal of you skipping your b-day party? KERSTIN I love my dad, but I hate his Canadian wife. No offense. SETH Shit. Seth takes another swig from Kerstin's coke bottle. Jinks leans over from behind the bench. JINKS So Kerstin, does that mean you can root a box then? GABRIEL Jesus Jinks, you scared me. SETH What kind of question is that? KERSTIN (Playful) What, are you saying I couldn't? SETH No, no. KERSTIN You think that girls can't hack. Is that it? Seth grins. SETH No, just American girls. KERSTIN Is that a challenge? SETH Perhaps. KERSTIN (Still playful) Fine. Name your terms. SETH If I win, we go on a date. KERSTIN Two problems with that. One – it's kind of creepy. Two – I'm not a whore. Seth smiles, but has a pained face. SETH Okay, name your terms then. KERSTIN If I win - Seth opens his eyes up and blinks, trying to maintain focus. There's a "thonk" sound and the screen goes black. EXT. BUSY STREET CORNER. DAY. Seth blinks. He is sitting cross-legged on the corner of a busy street intersection. He looks around, bewildered, and then to his watch. He grabs his head in pain. Seth pats his pockets. He grabs his wallet, peers inside, and looks back up in gives off a grunt. Seth grabs his phone, and sees that there are three missed calls. He dials a number. INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Gabriel is sleeping on the floor. The phone in his shirt pocket begins to vibrate. Its screen glows through the cloth. GABRIEL (Tired) Hell-lo? EXT. BUSY STREET CORNER. DAY. SETH Gab, what happened last night? INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. GABRIEL Spiked drinks. And you and Kerstin decided to do some kind of competition. SETH (Through phone) Really? EXT. BUSY STREET CORNER. DAY. GABRIEL (Through phone) Yeah. What time is it? Seth looks at his watch. SETH 8:12 AM. GABRIEL (Through phone) How about you call me later and we'll talk about it. Alright? Seth clasps the phone shut. INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Gabriel collapses back on the floor. EXT. BUSY STREET CORNER. DAY. Seth looks around him, and starts walking. EXT. CAFE PATIO. DAY. Seth, Gabriel, Kerstin and Eric are sitting around a table. GABRIEL Are you guys still in? KERSTIN Yes! SETH (Not excited) Yeah, yeah. ERIC Awesome. So here's the deal: You must each perform technically challenging social feats. The one who pulls off the best stunt will get bragging rights, but as you so enthusiastically agreed to last night Seth, the loser will have to wear a dress for a day. Seth looks to Gabriel with an incredulous gaze. SETH Did I really agree to this? GABRIEL Don't look at me like that, this was your idea. SETH That's not particularly fair is it? It's no big deal if she ends up wearing a dress. KERSTIN You chose the terms Seth. You can still back out if you want. SETH No, it's all right. I'll do it. ERIC Great. Gabriel and I will be the judges. EXT. RETAIL MEGASTORE. Seth is on a patch of grass outside the megastore parking lot. Eric and Kerstin are with him. Seth has his laptop open with him. He tethers his cellphone to his laptop. ERIC What are you doing? SETH You'll see. Seth's laptop is open. He Googles for the name of the megastore on a certain road, and yields search results with phone numbers. INT. RETAIL MEGASTORE. Gabriel is walking around the store with an empty shopping cart. EXT. RETAIL MEGASTORE. Seth talks through a headpiece on his laptop. He dials a number through Skype. RECORDING (through speakers) Welcome to Ben's Megastore. There is a pause. RECORDING (through speakers) For cookware, please press one; for electronics, please press two; for hardware please press three. Seth presses a key on his laptop, producing a multifrequency tone. MEGASTORE EMPLOYEE (through speakers) Hardware. SETH Hey – I'm James with electronics? MEGASTORE EMPLOYEE (through speakers) Yeah, whats up James. SETH Well uh – you see I gotta make an announcement about a sale. Manager's not here though. Do you what the number is to get on the PA? MEGASTORE EMPLOYEE (through speakers) Star four seven. SETH Thanks. Seth presses a button on his laptop to hang up, and then presses the redial button, followed by the star four seven keys. SETH To our valued customers... INT. RETAIL MEGASTORE. SETH (Overhead) ...we have a surprise giveaway in our store today! The first five customers to reach aisle 5 will receive a free Mango MP3 player, valued at over $350! This is a one time giveaway, so hurry over now! Gabriel is bent over a row of refrigerated foods. He looks over to a woman with a shopping cart, who looks back at him, still, frozen product in hand. He looks up - "Aisle 5" - and back down to her. The sound of clanking carts can be heard, increasing in volume. EXT. RETAIL MEGASTORE. Seth gets a text message from Gabriel. GABRIEL (text message) Success! KERSTIN Nice, but hardly original. EXT. BUSY URBAN AREA. DAY. Seth runs down a sidewalk, past laundromats and car repair shops. EXT. UNDER BUSY BRIDGE. DAY. Seth stumbles as he approaches the bridge. Kerstin is sitting down on the incline with Eric and Gabriel. She is wearing a reflective construction jacket. SETH (catching his breath) Sorry guys, I took the wrong bus. KERSTIN It's okay, we were late ourselves. Here, take this. She pulls a clipboard from her backpack and hands it to Seth. Seth cocks his head with a perplexed look. Kerstin glances at him. KERSTIN You'll see. She finishes rummaging through her bag and zips it back up. KERSTIN Alright, are we all ready? Let's go. EXT. URBAN ROAD. DAY. Kerstin, Seth, Gabriel and Eric are walking down the sidewalk. Gabriel and Eric are engaged in a conversation. Kerstin looks up and back down the opposite end of the road. KERSTIN There's too many of us here. Can you guys go over by that pole? ERIC Yeah, no probs. Eric and Gabriel move away, towards a post. Kerstin looks up: it's a mobile electronic construction sign, the kind that informed oncoming traffic of temporary lane closures and construction work. Kerstin holds the lock that's on the cabinet by its side and sighs. She grabs a yellow helmet and passes it to Seth. KERSTIN Put this on. Kerstin unfolds a satchel containing lock picking instruments. She takes a tensor and pick, and starts picking away at the lock that's on the cabinet. Multiple shots of her fiddling, mixed in with Seth looking at her contorted face, smiling (love.) She stops. KERSTIN I'm having trouble with this. Seth turns around. Gabriel and Eric are talking enthusiastically with each other by the post. SETH No problem. Seth takes the tensor and pick. He starts working at the lock, applying pressure with the tensor and dancing the pick in. There's a click. KERSTIN Thank you. This lock wasn't here a few days ago.  Kerstin opens the cabinet door and grabs the manual, flipping a few pages over. EXT. THE POST. DAY. Gabriel and Eric are by the post. The sign changes from "Traffic Slow Ahead" to "Live Nudes, Exit 122." Seth and Kerstin walk towards them. Kerstin has a glowing smile. Gabriel has a smirk. GABRIEL Not bad, not bad. ERIC I approve. EXT. PARLIAMENT HILL. DAY. Seth, Kerstin, Gabriel and Eric are sitting on the ground. Seth is at his laptop, with a single headphone but to his ear. SETH Okay, it's almost ready. Seth unplugs the headphones from the machine, and looks at the screen motionless for a few seconds. GABRIEL What is it we're waiting for? SETH You'll see. The group focuses on the screen. Suddenly a double beep is heard from the speakers. Seth motions the others to be silent. SETH Hi and welcome to Radeon Theater. For movie listings, please press one. For - A DTMF tone is heard. SETH I'm sorry, but the tone did not register. Please press harder. The DTMF tone is heard again. SETH No, press harder. The tone goes on for longer. SETH PRESS HARDER DAMNIT! The tone lasts for four seconds. SETH Thank you. Unfortunately, all our recordings are busy at the moment playing the theater times to other customers. Please hang up and call back later. A double beep is heard. Seth to the others. SETH I took over the phone system for the Radeon Theater out in the east end. ERIC How? SETH I put call forwarding on their line. All the calls that they would normally get are being rerouted to this conference number. A double beep interrupts Seth. SETH Hello, Radeon Theaters. SETH Hello? MIDDLE-AGED FEMALE (through speakers) Oh, hi there. I was expecting a recording. SETH Yeah, the system is down for today. Is there anything we can help you with? MIDDLE-AGED FEMALE Well, I just wanted the times for your movies today? SETH Sure thing. We have Bush Hour, playing at 4:45, 6:30, and 8:15. Then there's Free My Willy, playing at 5:15, 7:10, and 9:20. There's also Saving Ryan's Privates, playing at 5:00, 6:45, and 8:30. Good Will Hunting is on as well. MIDDLE-AGED FEMALE Got anything with kids? ERIC (interjects) Do we ever! EXT. HIGH-RISE. DUSK. Gabriel and Seth are waiting by the building's front entrance. Eric walks up. ERIC Hey guys! Have you seen Kerstin? SETH Nope. Seth exhales against his hand, and smells it. Kerstin walks out of the building. She takes off latex gloves. SETH Hey you! So where's this big finale? KERSTIN Oh, you'll see. Follow me. The trio follow her around the building and across the street. KERSTIN Look up. The group complies. ERIC Oh my God. GABRIEL You have truly outdone yourself. The office lights on the building facade had been turned off and on such that they formed the image of a giant heart. SETH How did you? KERSTIN It took a week of showing up as a "sanitation engineer" to get to this point. EXT. SHOPPING MALL ROOF TERRACE. DAY. The camera goes from looking inside the mall to out the doors of the upstairs terrace. Seth looks over the ledge to the tattoo parlors and smoke shops on the busy street below. He turns around to see the others milling about. Eric is on his laptop with Gabriel, typing away. ERIC Alright, come on over. The others approach. Eric taps the mouse pad, and the sound of drum rolls emanate from his speakers. ERIC And the winner is... Neither of you. Or both of you. It's a tie. KERSTIN Oh come on! ERIC Now, now. Kerstin with the Nekotel stunt and Seth with the accumulating of 2,530 university login credentials and counting. SETH So you're just going to leave us hanging? ERIC Do you *want* to wear a skirt? SETH Fair enough. Are you guys up for celebrating this semi-victory with the irresponsible over consumption of alcohol? EXT. SETH'S BACKYARD. DAY. Seth is sitting, head back with a rag on his forehead, eyes closed. His school notes are on his lap. Laptop is on the ground beside him, and a glass of water is beside it. Seth looks in visible pain. The roommate walks out from inside with a package of hotdogs. ROOMMATE Want anything on the BBQ? Seth keeps his eyes shut. SETH Yeah, actually. It might help with this massive headacke. Could you put on two extra dogs? The roommate takes out two hot dogs from a nearby package and puts them onto the grill. ROOMMATE Sure. So how are classes going for you? Seth leans his back against the fence. SETH Business as usual: they're raping me up the ass. How about you? ROOMMATE Same, especially with advanced geostatistics. Something like 56% of students fail it on their first go around. Speaking of which, have you seen your exam schedule yet? SETH No, didn't even know it was out. The sound of bells come from Seth's laptop. SETH Sorry. I set up an alert to let me know whenever Kerstin comes online. Seth goes to the laptop. ROOMMATE You know, in some societies, they have a word for people who are that obsessive over a girl. INT. KERSTIN'S ROOM. DAY. Kerstin is at her computer chair, running her fingers over an art piece on her desk. A new window pops on her screen. SETH (instant message) Hey Kerstin The message produces a sound. She looks up. KERSTIN (instant message) Hey SETH (instant message) Are you a big fan of rice tea? EXT. SETH'S BACKYARD. KERSTIN (instant message) Rice tea? INT. KERSTIN'S ROOM. SETH (instant message) We're all hitting this epic little tea house tomorrow for a bit of fun. Want to come? KERSTIN (instant message) Sure ^_^ EXT. SETH'S BACKYARD. Seth has a big smile. ROOMMATE Looks like someone's feeling better. EXT. FARMER'S MARKET. DAY. Seth speeds past the stalls of ethnic foods and fresh produce. INT. TEA HOUSE. Seth walks in, and nods to Kerstin and Gabriel who are already sitting down. He puts his bag down and sits with them. SETH Hey guys, been waiting long? GABRIEL No, no. Eric got called in to work this morning, he said he might show up later. SETH Did you fill Kerstin in on what we do here? GABRIEL Not yet. I showed up seconds before you did. Seth opens up his laptop. SETH This market in lunch central.  There are more laptops around here per square centimeter than anywhere else in the city. So as you can imagine, wireless Internet is big. Now guess how many wireless access points are within range. Kerstin shrugged. Seth raises two fingers. KERSTIN Two? SETH Two. GABRIEL ...that are completely open. The others are encrypted or require you to pay money. SETH But everyone connects to these two routers because they want free Internet. This is where we come in. Do you know what ARP cache poisoning is? KERSTIN It's for man-in-the-middle attacks isn't it? GABRIEL Have you used it before? KERSTIN Nope. GABRIEL Alright well you'll see it's pretty easy. We use it to reroute all of the traffic here to run through our laptops. And that's where the fun bit comes in. SETH Because all these people have their traffic going through our laptops first, we can mess with their Internet connection. Seth looks down at his laptop screen and swivels it around. SETH So I have a guy here. He's surfing on a store website. Nothing too special, but if we wanted, we could do anything from replace the pictures he sees to spoofing SSL certificates and nab his credit card info. Kerstin glares at him. SETH Don't worry. We don't touch financials. GABRIEL On that note, I think I have a real contender here. This guy is surfing for pictures of fourteen year old girls on SocialPhoto. SETH Oh ho. Sleazy. GABRIEL Idea: I'm going to write a filter so that the next time he visits a page, he'll have a little surprise waiting for him. KERSTIN You guys are unbelievable. SETH I know. Isn't it great? KERSTIN Awful. Absolutely awful. So what exactly are you using to do this? Seth moves over to Kerstin's laptop. SETH I'll show you. The sound of a woman in a loud mid-orgasmic groan erupts from a nearby laptop. The owner clasps the device shut and is visibly embarrassed. Gabriel is laughing. SETH Your doing I presume? GABRIEL I just couldn't resist. The guy was looking up photos of girls who don't even know what pubes are. I mean c'mon! EXT. FARMER'S MARKET. DAY. Shots of people moving through the market. INT. TEA HOUSE. Seth and Gabriel are around a laptop looking through some Wireshark logs. KERSTIN Oh this is neat. Someone is logging into a computer remotely. GABRIEL What are they up to? KERSTIN I don't know. They're using SSH to encrypt it. GABRIEL Ooo, someone who knows what they're doing. Shall we crack the encryption? SETH The Binary Phunksters had a video that showed how to do it. I'll pull it up. UNIDENTIFIED MALE Sweet Jesus! GABRIEL Forgot about that one - that guy was surfing homophobic crap. So I made it so that whenever he would surf anywhere, it would forward him to a random porn site for furries.  SETH There's more than one? GABRIEL Don't knock it till you try it. KERSTIN (taking a yawn) I found out how to compromise the encryption. SETH That was fast. Is it easy? KERSTIN Easy enough. First I need to spoof some reset packets to force him offline. He'll have to send the encryption keys again if he wants to resume what he was doing. When he does, this program will be waiting for him. We'll be able to see everything he does. I'm sending the reset packets now... The trio look around, still, at the motionless screen. Suddenly, activity. KERSTIN He went for it! Now we wait. EXT. FARMER'S MARKET. DAY. Shots of people, the city. INT. TEA HOUSE. Seth gets up and stretches his legs. Gabriel has a textbook open and is writing in a binder. SETH This is surprisingly boring. He's not doing anything. KERSTIN How about we just leave the capture running and move on to something else? SETH Sounds good. Hey here's a guy who is searching for how to stop hackers from tapping his brain. GABRIEL Oh this is going to be fun. EXT. EVENING SKY. Timelapse footage of the sky going from day to night. INT. SETH'S ROOM. NIGHT. Seth is laying in his bed reading the same textbook. His phone vibrates on the bedside table. He looks at the display - Gabriel. SETH Hey Gab, what's up? INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. NIGHT. GABRIEL VNC into my box. SETH (over phone) Now? I've got another fifty pages to read for tomorrow. INT. SETH'S ROOM. NIGHT. GABRIEL (over phone) Remember that SSH traffic that Kerstin intercepted today? SETH Yeah? GABRIEL Well, I have it here. I went through it Seth. The guy wasn't so boring after all. SETH Okay. Hold on - I'll VNC in. Seth goes to his computer and starts up VNC. He types in the hostname for Gabriel's computer, enters a password, and logs in. The audience sees Gabriel's screen appear Seth's laptop. There's a distinct wallpaper, light on details (to help make the link that this is Gabriel's computer.) INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. NIGHT. The same screen above is seen at Gabriel's desk. Gabriel is on the phone. GABRIEL Take a look at this. What does that look like to you? It's a capture of IRC traffic in wireshark. Gabriel moves over a hex editor and highlights a part of the Wireshark window. GABRIEL See that? INT. SETH'S ROOM. NIGHT. The same screen is seen in a window on Seth's computer. SETH This looks like botnet IRC traffic. Our mystery man's computer infected with a virus? GABRIEL (over the phone) Actually, I don't think he was one of the victims. From the looks of things Seth, he was actually the one controlling the infected computers of other people. INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. NIGHT. GABRIEL I looked up the commands he was typing in. These are the same type of commands that a botnet called Meteo uses. SETH Never heard of it. GABRIEL It's a pretty big one. Bigger than what this guy controls. SETH (over the phone) And just how many computers does mystery man control? Gabriel walks away from the screen. INT. SETH'S APPARTMENT. NIGHT. GABRIEL (over the phone) From what I counted, seventy-eight. SETH That is small. I mean as far as botnets and evil hackers go. GABRIEL (over the phone) I still haven't told you the kicker yet. SETH What's that? INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. NIGHT. GABRIEL Check the names of the machines. Random characters, which is classic botnet behaviour. But then look at the MOTD. Gabriel, back at his screen, highlights the nicknames of the infected machines in the TCP raw stream capture. They all have random characters for names, but "test" is the MOTD. SETH (over the ohone) This is some kind of test? GABRIEL This guy might be running something bigger elsewhere. Whatever the case, he had this group of infected computers download an executable. I was able to extract a copy from the capture and sent it off to Eric for him to tinker with. INT. SETH'S ROOM. NIGHT. SETH We should do a little write up on this. Dust off the blog and put it on there. GABRIEL (over the phone) Good idea. I'll send you what I have. Do you want to get together tomorrow and see what else we can dig up on this? INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. NIGHT. SETH (over the phone) Yes. This is a really cool find. GABRIEL Hells yeah. I'll send yo what Kerstin gave me, okay? INT. SETH'S ROOM. NIGHT. SETH Alright. Night. Seth sits at his computer. The clock on his desk flies from 11:24PM to 2:03AM. Seth types the last few words on his article, "The Botnet Chronicles" and clicks on the "Post" button. He locks the screen and jumps into bed (off screen.) The blog is titled "The Musings of a Bored Hacker." CGG. ANIMATED SEQUENCE Camera passes by monitors of people as the news story progresses from the blog, to a feed aggregator, to another blog, to a news site (reddit clone), to another news site (dotslash), to a feed, and finally to the Black Hat's monitor. "Trio Discover Botnet" "Another Meteo-based Botnet Out There" "Three Pranksters vs. Bot Herder" etc. INT. BLACK HAT'S ROOM. NIGHT. The Black Hat closes a irssi session. He opens a can of cola, and launches a web browser. The camera looks at him as he clicks and clicks. He's on a hardware site, with a news feed on the side. He clicks on the words "Trio stumble on Meteo copycats?" He clicks on the link, which loads a new article. It includes a transcript of his traffic. He spits out the contents of his cola out. He clicks a link and lands on Seth's original article. He opens a new window, and does a WHOIS. The site explains that the info is hidden. He looks up historical WHOIS information. He gets Seth's address. BLACK HAT You're going down friend. INT. SETH'S ROOM. DAY. Seth is sprawled in bed, snoring. The phone begins to vibrate. Seth keeps on snoring. The monitor on Seth's computer wakes from sleep. Skype turns on with a video chat. GABRIEL (over video chat) Seth SETH Seth SEEEETH WAKE UP. Seth puts a pillow over his head. SETH Whaaaaat. INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. DAY. Gabriel is at his computer. He has VNC open, and is opening windows on Seth's machine. GABRIEL You have to see this. SETH (over video chat) Later dude. INT. SETH'S ROOM. DAY. GABRIEL (over video chat) This is serious. Get up now. SETH Fuck. Fine. Seth throws the pillow and gets up. He goes over to his monitor, and his eyes open wide. SETH What the hell? Seth is looking over an article on Dotslash, called "Trio behind Météo botnet?" It has pictures of Seth and Gabriel. Seth eyes go over a few key passages - "Knew we were close, so threw a red herring" - "We've been onto them for months" - "behind attacks on anti-spam group SpamCasa." SETH Is this actually real? GABRIEL (over video chat) Oh its real. Its not just that too eh? There are fake forum posts out there by people pretending to be us saying how we did this. Seth clicks over to another window. Its fake forum posts, with his picture as the avatar. GABRIEL (over video chat) Not just forums, but on IRC too. People think that we were the ones to control the botnet and to release some kind of update. Seth wipes his eyes with his hands. SETH Hold on, we were the ones who told people about this botnet. How did we go from that to being accused of running the same thing we told people about? Plus wasn't this a test botnet to begin with? Seth scrolls down an article. INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. DAY. GABRIEL Preaching to the choir Seth. SETH (over video chat) Ah fuck. There's even IP addresses pointing to us? GABRIEL It traces to a local ISP. They assume its us. INT. SETH'S ROOM. DAY. Seth is clicking around and reading articles rapidly. GABRIEL (over video chat) The short of it Seth is that our names are all over this. Yours, mine, and Kerstin's. We need to meet up and maybe come up with a new blog post or something to tell people that this isn't us doing this. INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. DAY. SETH (over video chat) When? GABRIEL Now. Eric's place. INT. SETH'S ROOM. DAY. Seth is getting his bag ready. GABRIEL (over video chat) I'll get a hold of Kerstin. I'll be right over okay? EXT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Seth walks up to the door with the same bag on his back. INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Seth walks down the stairs. Gabriel and Eric are talking. Gabriel looks up. GABRIEL Hi Seth. It's worse now. SETH What? What happened? GABRIEL I thought they were saying we were running that test botnet. The one with eighty zombie PCs. That's a pretty bad accusation, but we can deal with that. SETH What did you find out Gabriel? Gabriel looks to the floor. His lips move, but says nothing. SETH What's going on Eric? What is it I don't know? GABRIEL They're pinning us for the Meteo botnet. That's the one with half a million infected computers. SETH You're fucking with me. GABRIEL Seth, you know me. You know I wouldn't joke about shit like this. ERIC Someone found a hash hidden in the the update that was propagated throughout the Meteo botnet yesterday. They passed it by a rainbow table and got your name out of it. SETH Wait what? My name is in that code? GABRIEL They're passing it off as sloppy programming. Whoever put this update out is framing us. EXT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Cars passing by. INT. ERIC'S BASEMENT. The trio are sitting down. SETH So we're being framed for creating one of the largest if not *the* largest network of infected computers out there. Weren't you saying that these machines send like thirty billion spam emails a day! ERIC A fifth of the spam on the Internet comes from the Meteo botnet. SETH This is bullshit. Gabriel surfs to the blog. There's a notice that the account was suspended. GABRIEL Seth, your blog was taken down. Seth's pocket vibrates. It's his cellphones. He grabs it, and we see that there are five missed calls. The CID shows the incoming number as 000-000-0000. SETH (answering phone) Hello? THREATENING VOICE Fucking spammer. I'm going to find out where you live and kill you. Oh wait - I do already know. Seth clasps his phone shut. GABRIEL Who was that? SETH A death threat. GABRIEL Are you fucking kidding me? INT. RCMP HALLS. DAY. Caption "Integrated Technological Crime Unit \\ Royal Canadian Mounted Police \\ London, Ontario, Canada." Senior RCMP Officer Graham DuHamel walks down the hall. He swipes an RF card by a reader mounted by a door. It beeps. He walks in. The label by the door identifies it as the "Tech Crime Unit - Forensics Data Recovery." INT. COMPUTER FORENSICS OFFICE. The room contains a few office cubicles. Kevin, another RCMP officer, is at his desk. GRAHAM Morning Kevin, did you see this? KEVIN Hold on a sec... Kevin scrolls down a few entries on his monitor. KEVIN Okay, what? Graham holds up a sheet from an online news site. GRAHAM Apparently the people behind the botnet screwed up and gave away their identities. Kevin turns back to face his monitor. KEVIN Good stuff. Chinese nationals again? GRAHAM Better. KEVIN Iranians? GRAHAM Canadians. Kevin swivels around and grabs the sheet from Graham's hands. KEVIN Let me see that. INT. ERIC'S BASEMENT. ERIC The RCMP or FBI always hit a brick wall when they want to bust these fuckers. Now here you are with all the evidence on a silver platter. The RCMP are going to be completely over you. SETH So we come clean. If the RCMP comes, we'll tell them everything. ERIC They don't care about what you think. As far as they're concerned, the evidence is there. And if they want you to plead guilty, you will plead guilty. There's no out. SETH Hold on now. The only thing pointing to us right now are forum posts and some code. I say we go home and stop worrying about this. ERIC That code with your name on it is on half a million infected computers Seth. That won't disappear just because you decided to ignore it. SETH I don't care. ERIC Wait, what? You don't care? You don't CARE!? GABRIEL Guys, just stop it alright? Kerstin is going to be here any second now and we better figure out what the hell we're going to tell her. INT. RCMP SENIOR RCMP OFFICER'S OFFICE. The Senior RCMP Officer is at his desk. There's a small television in the office, turned off. Kevin, and Graham are sitting across. SENIOR RCMP OFFICER I got a call from media relations. A reporter phoned them this morning wondering what we were doing about these homegrown hackers. We have to figure out what we're going to do here. GRAHAM We'll get the search warrant, clone their drives, and get the evidence we need. We're in, we're out, it's done. KEVIN I did a quick web search on the suspects. Two of them did talk at a hacker conference on how not to get caught. As in how not to get caught breaking into networks. I don't think we'll have any problems getting the judge to sign off on the warrants. EXT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. A car screeches into the entrance of Eric's driveway. Gabriel, Seth and Eric stand outside the doorway. Kerstin gets out of her car, slamming the door shut. KERSTIN Why did you have to mention me on your site? Why?! SETH I'm sorry! Look I didn't know any of this would happen. KERSTIN You fucker! SETH I'm sorry alright? KERSTIN Screw you. ERIC Guys, the RCMP won't sit on their ass. Eric points to Kerstin. ERIC This is not helping. SETH I still think that you're really making something out of nothing. The RCMP is not going to show up on our doorsteps. GABRIEL An hour ago you got a death threat and you think we'll be okay? SETH Because some idiot found my number. I bet you anything the police don't know shit about this. I still say we should go home and forget about everything. ERIC Fine, but whatever you choose you can't be here. You have to go. Seth's cellphone vibrates. He takes it out of his pocket. It's his roommate. SETH Hello? INT. SETH'S APPARTMENT. DAY. The roommate looks out the window. ROOMMATE I'm kind of freaking out here. There's a car across the street with tinted windows that's taking a bunch of photos of our place. This is like two years ago all over again. What's going on? EXT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Seth hangs up the phone. INT. SETH'S APPARTMENT. DAY. ROOMMATE Seth? Hello? The roommate hangs up the phone. ROOMMATE (under his breath) What did you do this time Seth? EXT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. SETH There's an undercover cop taking photos of my house. ERIC It's so they can get a description of the place for the warrant. Dude they're going to bust you. It might be tomorrow, it might be next week, but they are going to bust you. Seth collapses on the front steps. SETH (defeated) They really are after us. ERIC Turn off your cell. They'll be able to position where you are. You guys really need to go. They'll come here next. SETH (softly) I should SSH into my box. Delete everything. Send a command to write over the sectors over and over till there's no real data left in the hard drive. ERIC Then they'll assume you're covering your tracks. Just leave it there. But you guys need to be on the move. Now. KERSTIN You guys can come in my car for now. Let's leave. SETH (meekly) I'll just get my bag. INT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Seth walks down to the basement. Gabriel is right behind, and grabs him by the wrist. GABRIEL You- you alright? SETH (softly) Yeah. I'm fine. The muffled sound of Kerstin's car starting up is audible. Seth puts his laptop in his bag and heads back up. EXT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Seth and Gabriel exit the home. Eric is on the front steps, Kerstin is in her car. ERIC Guys... Good luck. GABRIEL Thanks. INT. KERSTIN'S CAR. Seth and Gabriel hop in. Gabriel in the front passenger side, Seth in the back. KERSTIN Where are we going? SETH I don't know. Anywhere I guess. GABRIEL I know of a quiet spot where we can hit up. Take Blair road towards the river. KERSTIN Good enough. Kerstin puts the car in gear and backs out. EXT. PARKWAY ROAD. DAY. Kerstin's car passes by. INT. KERSTIN'S CAR. KERSTIN So what do we do? GABRIEL I don't know. Seth? Gabriel turns around to face Seth. GABRIEL Seth? Seth has his eyes wide open. His mouth words something in quiet. He begins to hyperventilate. SETH Stop the car. KERSTIN We're still too close to Eric's place. SETH Stop it now. GABRIEL (to Kerstin) I think I'd do it if I were you. EXT. PARKWAY ROAD. Kerstin pulls the car onto the shoulder. Seth gets out and started to make gagging motions. He then vomits. Gabriel exits the car and stands by his side, rubbing his back. Seth throws up a second time. Tears flow down his face. SETH I'm... I'm better. It's over. GABRIEL We should keep moving. Seth nods. The pair re-enter the car. EXT. DESOLATE RIVER LOCATION. DAY. The location is desolate greenery by the river. No buildings in sight. Kerstin parks the car. The trio exit the vehicle. GABRIEL Are you feeling better? SETH Yeah, much. Kerstin? Kerstin does not answer and sits down on the grass nearby.  They look on at the river. GABRIEL We need to think about what we should do. Gabriel throws a stone in the water. SETH Well, we could turn ourselves over to the people who were taking photos of my place. But I'm really afraid of what would happen if we were arrested and no one believed us. GABRIEL Same, but it's not like we can run away from this either. Pause. KERSTIN It's not running away if we're pretending to be gone for a legitimate reason, like a camping trip. GABRIEL I don't think they'd fall for that. And even if they did, in three days or whatever we'd be just as screwed as we are now. SETH Not if we prove for them that we're not behind this botnet. KERSTIN There's so much there planted to make it seem like it's us though. Forum posts, the update logs... SETH That's true. But remember that entry on the AntiOffline discussion board? INT. SETH'S ROOM. DAY. Flashback. Seth is at his computer, looking over the AntiOffline discussion board. KERSTIN (voice over) No. SETH (voice over) Okay. Well, there was someone there pretending to be us. An admin verified that the IP of the person came from here. They were using that as proof that it was us. In other words, whoever is framing us lives in this city too. EXT. DESOLATE RIVER LOCATION. DAY. GABRIEL So the guy we intercepted is up to this? SETH Well, we intercept his traffic at the tea house and find out he's doing something with a test botnet. Next thing we know, someone from this city is going around framing us for a big motherfucking botnet. GABRIEL Or the guys behind the Meteo botnet read the article you wrote and used that opportunity to blame us. There are other ways to make it seem like those forum posts came from the same city as us. Seth goes to tether his cellphone to the laptop. KERSTIN Hold on - what are you doing? SETH Getting the Internet. KERSTIN Eric was right. They'll be able to track you. GABRIEL There's a park nearby where you can grab free wifi. It's a two minute drive away. EXT. QUIET PARK. DAY. The trio walk down a park. Seth has his laptop open. SETH We have a signal here. GABRIEL There's some benches there. The three sit at a bench. SETH Okay, so here we have the file that we saw the guy send yesterday. And now I'm downloading the update that propagated on the Météo botnet last night. Seth clicks around. He starts a curses-based visual binary diff tool. He compares the two files. SETH And there we go. The blue shows what's the same between the two updates. The red is what's different. It's pretty much all the same, except for these blocks here. Seth clicks on the first of the three red blocks. A hexidecimal output is displayed. GABRIEL Holy crap. That's the hash with your name in it. KERSTIN You lost me. SETH The only difference between the file that we captured yesterday and this update is the evidence planted against us. Seth looks around him. SETH Our hacker has access to the code for the Meteo botnet before it even comes out. He has access to it. Maybe he's a developer. KERSTIN So he put your name in the code? SETH Yes. GABRIEL You make alot of assumptions there Seth. SETH I don't think I am. Let's go over this. First, we run across a guy who runs a botnet. We know now that he has priviledged access to the much bigger Meteo botnet. Then I talk about him on the blog, and next thing we know our names are in an update for the Meteo botnet. If he's not behind this, he knows who is. EXT. RCMP OFFICE BUILDING. DAY. Kevin is loading up their forensics equipment in the back of a navy blue van. Graham approaches him. GRAHAM Did you hear? KEVIN What? GRAHAM The search warrants were just executed for all three homes. Kevin keeps packing the van. KEVIN Jesus that was fast. GRAHAM Yeah, well... Anyways, they're just waiting for us to collect the goods. KEVIN Were the kids there? GRAHAM No. I heard though that a unit was dispatched to find them. Did you know that the girl is an American diplomat's daughter? KEVIN Oh that's going to make us popular. Kevin closes the van door shut. EXT. QUIET PARK. DAY. SETH Okay, so let's sum up: what do we have on this guy? GABRIEL Well, we were at a public venue when we intercepted the data, which makes his local IP address useless. But we do have the Internet address and credentials to the box he logged into from the tea shop. Kerstin is typing away at her laptop. She has "access denied" messages from failed SSH logins. KERSTIN I'm trying to log into the server he was accessing, but he must have erased his account. It doesn't work anymore. SETH Is the box still up though? KERSTIN Yeah, its just that I can't login. Gabriel is at his own laptop. GABRIEL It's a web server. SETH What? GABRIEL The machine the hacker had SSHed into is a web server. I just port scanned it, and lo-and-behold, port 80 was responding. It hosts the website for The Law Offices of Jordon, Gilmore and McNealy. Gabriel swivels his laptop around to show the website of the lawyers to Seth. KERSTIN He compromised a web server? Gabriel swivels the laptop back to face him. GABRIEL Or maybe he's their web designer and has or had legit access. Looks like this law office is in Halifax. KERSTIN Well that's great. All that we know from this guy is that he connected to a non-existent account, from an untraceable spot. Yeah, that's going to sure convince the police. Kerstin puts her head between her hands. SETH We are fucked aren't we. GABRIEL Yeah, I'd say so. EXT. 401 HIGHWAY. DAY. The navy blue RCMP van passes by a sign. Graham is looking over some papers. GRAHAM So I'm reading up on their profiles. There's something interesting here. KEVIN (driving) What's that? GRAHAM The lead suspect. Seth Arnott. There's no information on him. Nothing with the telcos, no history with Revenue Canada. KEVIN So the name is an alias. GRAHAM That's where it gets weird. They looked into the bank account that was tied to his rental payments - and it belongs to a Sidney Arnott. KEVIN His mom's paying his rent? GRAHAM Not unless his mom is his age. I think Sidney and Seth might be the same person. KEVIN But Sidney is a she, and Seth is a he, right? GRAHAM Our records indicate that Sidney is a she, yes. KEVIN Huh. Think that once the courts are done with him, that we could maybe hire him to fix up our internal database? Graham takes out his cellphone. KEVIN What are you doing? GRAHAM I have a theory. EXT. QUIET PARK. DAY. Seth looks at his watch. The three are resting on their backs on the ground. Seth looks at the sky. GABRIEL The logs. SETH Mmmmm? GABRIEL The server's authorization logs. It'll have all the IPs that the hacker connected from when he was using the machine. SETH He could have erased them. He did have the foresight to delete his account. KERSTIN Well, let's at least try. We have nothing else to go with. SETH And how are we going to try? By hacking in? GABRIEL Why not? There's a pause. SETH Alright. Why the fuck not. I'll see if I can use some XSS or MySQL injection attacks against the web server. Maybe I can get some valid credentials out of it. GABRIEL I'll fingerprint the machine and see what version of the OS it's running. Maybe it's vulnerable to something that's come out. KERSTIN Well, I guess then I'll reverse DNS and see if they're collocating, maybe try to get at the web apps on the other sites. GABRIEL What about social engineering the login credentials out of the hosting place? SETH No. We can't afford to screw up with that just as we can't try to bruteforce our way in. If they get suspicious and take that server down, then we're going to lose the only thing we have going for us. The three get to work on their laptops. Music. Shots of Seth looking at the source and Firebug. Gabriel uses nmap and fingerprints the OS. Kerstin reverse DNS to see what other sites are hosted from that IP. EXT. 401 HIGHWAY. DAY. GRAHAM (on the phone) Alright, thanks. Graham gets off the cell phone. KEVIN So? Were you right? GRAHAM They think so. Seth Arnott was formally known as Sidney Arnott. If he's transgendered, that'll explain alot of the discrepancies. KEVIN A woman who pretends to be a man. Didn't see that one coming. EXT. NATURES OF NATURE. Footage of greenery around the park. EXT. QUIET PARK. DAY. A low-power warning message pops on Gabriel's screen. GABRIEL My laptop's almost out of power. SETH Mine too. KERSTIN I got nothing guys. SETH Let's go find a place to plug-in. GABRIEL Why? We won't get anywhere. Let's be realistic here. SETH Then let's retrieve those files manually. KERSTIN Huh? SETH The WHOIS records show that the server is being managed by a hosting company in Toronto. Let's just go there and get those files ourselves. GABRIEL How? Say "pardon, but could we please have a file that's on your server?" I'm sorry. I just don't see it. SETH We'll figure out something. GABRIEL I'm sorry guys, but enough is enough. I'm going home. SETH But the logs was your idea. And it was a good one. GABRIEL Look. Had this worked, I would have gone on. Maybe. But Toronto? No way. I'm not going to go on the run. I'm not a criminal. SETH (softly) Gabriel... KERSTIN I'll give you a lift back to a transit station. You'll be able to take a bus from there. GABRIEL Thank you. EXT. SUBURBAN ROADS. DAY. Kerstin is driving the car. SETH Gab... I can't do this without you. GABRIEL If you want to go, that's up to you. But what are you going to accomplish by running away from the RCMP? SETH Kerstin, what about you? KERSTIN Thanks to you I'll be extradited either way. At least if we do this, I have a chance of proving to my dad that it really wasn't me. GABRIEL Are you guys sure you want to do this? Do you really want to go on the run? I mean Kerstin, maybe they won't kick you out. Silence. EXT. SHOPPING CENTER W/ TRANSIT STATION. DAY. Kerstin's car arrives at the shopping center's parking lot. The trio exits. GABRIEL I don't know what to say. SETH What is there to say. This is a shitty situation. GABRIEL Let's at least walk to the bus stop together. The three walk to the transit station. SETH Is this what you really want to do? GABRIEL No. You? SETH Not at all. But with all this shit piled up against us and nothing to say otherwise... GABRIEL We have the packet dump. You don't have to go running around Toronto. SETH Yeah, but they could say that we faked it. And I don't trust some Luddite seventy year old judge to make the right call. EXT. TRANSIT STATION. DAY. GABRIEL Well, this is it. See you guys. Seth gives Gabriel a long hug. SETH See ya. Gabriel shakes Kerstin's hands. GABRIEL (to Kerstin) Good luck. KERSTIN (softly) Bye. Gabriel turns around and heads for the transit station doors. EXT. SHOPPING CENTER W/ TRANSIT STATION. DAY. Cue music. Seth and Kerstin head back towards the car. INT. TRANSIT STATION. DAY. Gabriel gets on a bus. INT. KERSTIN'S CAR. DAY. Seth and Kerstin hop in. EXT. SUBURBAN NEIGHBOURHOOD. DAY. Gabriel walks down the neighbourhood. He looks at a white van with tinted windows. Gabriel walks up to his door. INT. KERSIN'S CAR. DAY. Kerstin is driving. Seth looks out the window. INT. GABRIEL'S HOME. DAY. The house is in disarray. Gabriel walks up the stairs. INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. DAY. The room is ransacked. The computer desk is without a computer. Gabriel shakes his head. He grabs a CD and puts it in the boombox and turns up the volume knob. He puts on the headphones. EXT. GABRIEL'S HOUSE. DAY. SWAT officers knock on the door. A man gives a nod and they bust in. INT. GABRIEL'S HOME. DAY. The officers run inside and clear the rooms. INT. GABRIEL'S ROOM. DAY. Gabriel has his eyes closed, tears flowing down his cheeks. The officers come in the room and surround him. The music is still playing. The officer's voice starts to come through. SWAT OFFICER #1 Are you Gabriel Fillion? Gabriel opens his eyes. The music has gone by this point. GABRIEL No, I'm his brother. Gabriel gets up and walks out the room. The officers look at each other. INT. GABRIEL'S HOME. DAY. Gabriel sits on the living room couch with a half-smile on his tearful face. He starts crying. INT. JINKS' APPARTMENT COMPLEX LOBBY. Seth presses the elevator button. KERSTIN Are you sure about this? SETH We can't keep using your car. They'll be looking out for it. And this guy is our best bet. The elevator door opens. INT. APPARTMENT COMPLEX - JINKS' FLOOR. Seth knocks on an appartment door. SETH I hope he's there. Loud footsteps are heard. An elderly immigrant woman opens the door. She does not look cheerful. SETH Hi, is Christopher home? JINKS' MOTHER (thick French accent) You wait. The woman turns around. JINKS' MOTHER Chris? Chriiis?! JINKS (off camera) What mom? JINKS' MOTHER T'as des amis a la porte! The woman turns back to Seth and Kerstin. JINKS' MOTHER He will come. The woman walks back inside. Jinks runs to the door. JINKS Seth! I read the story on Dotslash dude. Half a  million infected computers. I knew you were real hackers. That's fucking awesome! SETH (calmly) Jinks. JINKS I can't believe it! I mean I thought you had gone all lame on me, but shit this is leet! SETH Jinks! Jinks stops with his mouth still agap. SETH We need your car. Just for a day. Maybe two. Can you spare it? JINKS Sure man, of course! Jinks turns around. JINKS Hey 'man! MAMAN! I'm taking the car! JINKS' MOTHER (offscreen) Qu'est-ce que tu veux dire "tu prends l'auto"?! Jinks grabs the keys from a bowl by the door and closes the door. INT. JINKS' CAR. The car is inside the apartment parking lot. Kerstin is at the wheel. Seth is on the passenger side. Jinks is at the back. KERSTIN Are we ready? SETH I am. Kerstin looks back to Jinks. JINKS Of course I am! Kerstin puts the car in gear and exits the garage. JINKS Oh man this is going to be so sweet! Gabriel is probably in jail, you're under surveillance - I'd do anything to be in your shoes! Seth looks away. Kerstin has her head slightly tucked in, in apparent irritation. JINKS But since this is /my/ car... um can I be up front with the hot chick? Kerstin slams the breaks. The car comes to a stop, before it even exits the parking lot. EXT. BUS TERMINAL. Shots of people walking inside. INT. BUS TERMINAL. MAIN HALL. Seth walks out of the washroom. Kerstin is waiting the other side of the hall and waves her hands. Seth raises his hand back and walks towards her. KERSTIN You know, maybe we should have just endured Jinks and driven down to Toronto. They start walking. SETH Don't feel bad about it. I don't know how much more of him I could have handled either. Were you able to get cash from the bank? KERSTIN Yes. I pulled my limit. SETH Good. I used mine to buy some disposable credit cards. We'll need them to buy the tickets for the ride down. I called up some buddies and we'll also have a place to stay once we get down there. KERSTIN Who? SETH Flow and i0. KERSTIN From Binary Phunksters? SETH Yeah. I used to be good friends with them around the time their show first started. I had done a few video segments for them. KERSTIN And they're okay with us just showing up there? Seth approaches the an automated ticket machine. Footage shown of him buying tickets to "Toronto." INT. BUS TERMINAL. TORONTO GATE. Seth and Kerstin are sitting down by the gate. INTERCOM The bus to *Toronto* will be boarding in *15* minutes. Seth and Kerstin get up. INT. GREYHOUND BUS. The two approach the back and put their bags in the overhead compartment. They sit down. KERSTIN (getting adjusted) So how do we get the data out of the place in Toronto? Gabriel's right - we can't just ask them. SETH I saw pictures of the hosting company's servers while checking their website. I think we have a chance of getting the files we need off their machines. KERSTIN But they won't just let you walk in there. SETH I know. We'll have to figure out something when we get there. EXT. GREYHOUND BUS. DAY. KERSTIN (through window) I don't get it. To me, there's a real possibility that this won't pan out. Aren't you just the least bit worried? SETH I know I should be, but I'm not anymore. It's like a switch flicked off in my head when I puked on the side of the road. INT. GREYHOUND BUS. Seth relaxes back. KERSTIN Well I'm terrified Seth. I'm really, really scared. SETH You don't show it. KERSTIN I rarely do. But I am. EXT. NEW RCMP OFFICE BUILDING. DAY. Kevin pulls in the navy blue van into the RCMP building's parking lot. Caption: ""A" Division Headquarters \\ Royal Canadian Mounted Police \\ Ottawa, Ontario, Canada". An officer is leaning against a car, waiting for them. Kevin parks the car. RCMP MAN #1 Welcome in town gentlemen. Good trip? KEVIN Pretty decent. There were a few idiots on the 401, but that was about it. RCMP MAN #1 We have some good news and some not so good news. Thought you might want to know. Kevin opens the back door of the van where the equipment is stored. He turns around. Graham goes inside the van to sift through their stuff. KEVIN Alright? RCMP MAN #1 The good news is that they caught one of the kids. On the flip side, they're also thinking that the other two went underground. Large withdrawals on their debit cards, cellphones off, it's not looking good. Graham walks out from inside the van with a briefcase in hand. GRAHAM That's too bad. RCMP MAN #1 But we have another lead now too. His name is Eric Ducharme and he was one of the last persons to be called by two of the three suspects. He also has a record for computer crime. INT. ROOM IN THE NEW RCMP BUILDING. Graham walks into the door of the room, his hands full from equipment in the van. He puts it down on a table. Kevin is at his computer. There's a cup of coffee by Kevin. GRAHAM How's the coffee here? KEVIN Pretty passable. So I was looking at the hard drive that they retrieved from one of the homes. GRAHAM And? INT. GREYHOUND BUS. Seth and Kerstin are sleeping. KEVIN (offscreen) The drive is encrypted. Now in your experience, how many times have you ever seen that? GRAHAM (offscreen) Oh I don't know. Maybe three or four times? Usually some wannabe using a joke of a shareware program to hide incriminating files. INT. ROOM IN THE NEW RCMP BUILDING. KEVIN I've seen it done once. It was a pedophile thinking he could hide a stash of photos. He was wrong. But what this guy here has is pretty solid. I'm looking into dictionary attacks. GRAHAM Alright. Any other tidbits? KEVIN Well, the kid runs some form of Linux, and he has a non-encrypted porn collection bigger than most consumer hard drives. Want to get started on the other machine? INT. UNION STATION. Caption "Toronto, Ontario, Canada." Seth and Kerstin get off the bus. He looks up at a camera and immediately turns his head. SETH Make sure not to look up at the cameras. KERSTIN Noted. Footsteps are heard from inside. The door opens. It's i0. I0 Oh no- SETH I know. But we have nowhere to go. Flow arrives at the entrance. FLOW Dude, what are you doing here? We told you that you couldn't stay here. This is some serious shit you're in. And Eric told me that Gabriel's been arrested? That's a big deal. SETH No one knows we're in Toronto. We just need a place where we can crash for the night. That's it. I0 We can't let you in. KERSTIN Please. FLOW I'm sorry guys, I really am. SETH Oh come on. I can't just go to a hotel, and you're the only two I know here. FLOW Sorry. They close the door. Seth stands still for a moment, his nose to the door. He turns around and sits on the front steps. Kerstin joins him. SETH I'm not leaving until you let us in! Seth turns to Kerstin. Her eyes look down, in apparent sadness. SETH I'll yell like this all night if I have to! There are loud footsteps from inside the home. There's a heated debate between Flow and i0, but it is unintelligible. SETH Maybe we should just give up. KERSTIN I don't know. Where else can we go? There's a pause. i0 swings the door open behind them. I0 Okay - we'll help you. You can crash here tonight. But under one condition. SETH What's that? I0 That you don't ever yell like that again, and that you're out of here tomorrow. SETH You have my word. i0 opens the door fully, and stands aside. Seth and Kerstin get up, and enter the home. INT. Seth is taking a sip from his bowl. KERSTIN So we need to get physical access to those servers. FLOW How do you plan on doing it? Seth wipes his mouth and puts down the bowl. SETH We don't know. FLOW Do you know where it is? SETH Yeah. The address is on the hosting company's website. I0 Well, let's check it out. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK. NIGHT. A sedan moves slowly through an industrial park. Flow, i0 and Kerstin are eating some food. SETH Morning guys. KERSTIN Hey. We were thinking that we should stake out the hosting place all day. Figure out how many employees are there and when they come in. SETH Sounds good. How about I do it? Seth goes for the kettle of tea. SETH May I? Flow nods. Seth pours himself some tea. SETH I could do rounds around the area, take notes. I don't know if I'd be that inconspicuous though. I0 No worries, we thought of the perfect cover. You would be the guy who records traffic activity at intersections. FLOW We'll give you a clipboard and a lawn chair - everyone will assume you're legit. SETH Alright. Thanks eh. KERSTIN And they've also agreed to let us stay for another night. FLOW Kerstin can be very convincing when she wants to be, it seems. KERSTIN Its almost eight. We should probably head. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK. DAY. Flow stops the car before the intersection and puts on his four-ways. Seth gets out and swings on a backpack. He then extracts then grabs a folding chair from the trunk. The target building is across the road. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. DAY. Seth is leans in to grab the clipboard from the front seat. FLOW It's funny how people always think you're there on official business when you're armed with a clipboard. SETH Yeah it is. You know I've been able to get backstage access to concerts using nothing more than one of these. FLOW We'll be back at six or seven. Do you have everything? SETH I think so. See you this evening. I0 We think we may have found a way into the building. Tell you about it later. Anything interesting on your end? SETH Not much. It looks like only twelve people work in there. At least that's what I've counted so far. FLOW Sounds good. I'll see you later. SETH Thanks for the food! INT. RCMP SENIOR RCMP OFFICER'S OFFICE. A young officer walks into the Senior RCMP Officer's office. RCMP WOMAN #1 Things are getting out of hand with the hacker case. The RCMP officer turns on the small television. It's a news report. INT. TELEVISION STUDIO. This is actual news footage mixed-in with recorded audio. The footage is seen from the perspective of the RCMP room and from a slight distance, so lip syncing issues aren't as visible. The news anchor is at a fancy desk with a superimposed picture of hands at a keyboard on the top right portion of the screen. FEMALE NEWS ANCHOR The three alleged hackers have been identified as Seth Arnott, Gabriel des Courtis and Kerstin Holland-Moritz. What can you tell us Art? EXT. POLICE STATION. DAY. MALE JOURNALIST The police have been tight lipped on the issue. But from what we can tell, sometime yesterday one of these alleged hackers slipped up and accidentally inserted his name into the botnet code. Now this is important Marie, because it finally ties names to this otherwise obscure network of infected computers. INT. RCMP SENIOR RCMP OFFICER'S OFFICE. DAY. The RCMP officer turns off the small television. RCMP WOMAN #1 We can't hold off on that press conference any longer. SENIOR RCMP OFFICER You're right. Thanks. The Senior RCMP Officer picks up the phone. The officer turns around to leave. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK. SUN SETTING. Seth looks up. The parking lot for the web hosting place is empty. Flow drives off. SETH So what did you guys get up to? KERSTIN We put together this live distro DVD. Put it in any of their servers and we should be able to connect in from the outside. We have the SSH daemon tunneling traffic over HTTP on port 80. SETH But we're still going to need to get into the building. I came up with a few ideas today on how we could do that. FLOW Before you speak: is it as awesome as faking a phone outage? SETH Come again? FLOW See that white telephone company box over there? EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK. SUN SETTING. The car passes by a telco box. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. SUN SETTING. SETH You're going to rewire it? FLOW We're going to cut service just for that web hosting company's building. They'll think they have an outage. SETH But there's a million wires in those boxes. How do you know which one belongs to the web hosting people? I0 We called the MLAC. SETH The what? FLOW The place that linemen call when they need to know exactly what we need to know – which copper wires in that box belong to an address. INT. BINARY PHUNKSTER'S HOME. DAY. Flashback. FLOW Hi yes George - I just got sent out here, but they didn't tell me which wire numbers... for 4220... INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. SUN SETTING. SETH Just like that? I0 Just like that. KERSTIN So their phone system goes on the fritz, and we come in to save the day. SETH (amazed) Alright, let's do it. FLOW I knew you'd like it. EXT. BINARY PHUNKSTER'S HOME. NIGHT. Flow's sedan pulls into the entrance. INT. BINARY PHUNKSTER'S HOME. NIGHT. The group is on the floor, eating pizza. KERSTIN We should hit the place in the middle of the night so that the guard can't call anyone to validate our presence. SETH From what I saw, they only have the one guard there. Doesn't look like any other employees stay overnight. FLOW I agree. i0 and I have some gear you can wear to look more like a lineman. SETH So when should we go? 1 AM? FLOW Does that sound reasonable to you guys? Seth, Kerstin and i0 nod. i0 quietly leaves the room. KERSTIN Yeah. SETH There's one thing that worries me though. We have our way into the building - fine. But there's a gazillion computers in there - how are we going to find out which one is the server we're looking for? FLOW You'll figure it out. There'll be labels or a sheet somewhere that tells you which one is which. KERSTIN So what do we do until we leave? i0 walks back in the room. He holds a DVD case in hand for "Big Buck Bunny". I0 Movie? SETH I could go with that. It's not like I can sleep right now anyways. KERSTIN Same. i0 puts on the movie. SETH (to Kerstin) I wonder how Gab is doing. FLOW Gab? SETH Gabriel. The music from the movie menu kicks in. i0 turns down the light. The camera focuses on the face of Seth, then Flow, then i0, then Kerstin as they look up to watch the movie. EXT. TORONTO CN TOWER. The guys are packing at the front. Seth puts radios in his bag. i0 has a white hard hat on his head. KERSTIN Who has the live distro? FLOW I do. Here you go. Kerstin puts it in her bag. EXT. BINARY PHUNKSTER'S HOME. NIGHT. The four walk out and get into the car. They drive off. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. FLOW Alright, so here are our two radios. How are we going to split these up? I say I should get one because it'll make me look more like an actual lineman. SETH Agreed. KERSTIN I'll grab the other. Flow you'll be with Seth, so you guys only need the one, and i0 - you don't need anything for what you'll do right? I0 Nope. Flow passes Kerstin a radio. FLOW Here you go. SETH I have to tell you guys that I'm starting to feel real queezy about this. FLOW What's going to happen will happen. No point in worrying about anything now. SETH That does not make me feel better. EXT. TORONTO TRAFFIC. NIGHT. Footage of Toronto highway traffic. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK. NIGHT. Flow's sedan passes by. The glow of Kerstin's open laptop is visible from outside the vehicle. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. KERSTIN I have a signal. Flow parks the sedan. It's across from the WEB HOSTING BUILDING building. FLOW Do you still have a connection? KERSTIN Wait. Yes. We have full Internet access. FLOW Good. Alright gentlemen, now it's our turn. Seth, Flow and i0 exit the vehicle. i0 has a crowbar with him. Seth has a tool belt. Flow has a tool box. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK. NIGHT. Seth, Flow, and i0 are seen walking outside. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK BY TELCO BOX. NIGHT. i0 uses his crowbar to pry open the doors of the telco box off. FLOW Need a light? I0 Yeah, that would be handy. Flow uses his cellphone screen as a flashlight. He scans down the rows of wires with i0. I0 There - these are the ones. i0 puts his bolt cutters down and pulls out two wires. I0 These guys should be without phone service now. i0 closes up the box door. Flow looks to Seth. SETH Here goes nothing. Flow and Seth walk up to the web hosting building. Seth puts on a hard hat. EXT. WEB HOSTING BUILDING ENTRANCE. NIGHT. Flow knocks loudly on the front door. Seth yawns. The guard approaches the door, unlocks it, and opens it a crack. FLOW (yawning) Hey. We're here to repair the phone line? SECURITY GUARD What? No one told me about this. FLOW Apparently its been intermittent all day. Check it for yourself if you want. SECURITY GUARD Please wait here. The guard locks the door and goes back inside. SETH I hope to God the MLAC gave us the right pairs. FLOW Don't worry. That's why I said the problem was intermittent - and not that the phone lines were completely down. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. Kerstin looks towards the entrance, where Seth and Flow are placed. Her laptop is still on. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK BY TELCO BOX. NIGHT. i0 is hidden in the bush by the telco box. He looks on. EXT. WEB HOSTING BUILDING ENTRANCE. NIGHT. The guard comes back and unlocks the door. SECURITY GUARD Sorry. No one said you were coming. Kind of late in the day though to be doing this? SETH Well it was either us or waiting 'till Tuesday for a day crew. The people here didn't seem like they could wait that long for a fix. SECURITY GUARD Ah. SETH (sighing) Yeah. The guard goes to poke his head out. FLOW Shall we? SECURITY GUARD Yes, yes. Seth and Flow enter. INT. TYRELL WEB HOSTING HALLS. NIGHT. Seth and Flow are walking down the halls behind the guard. FLOW What kind of operation do you run here? SECURITY GUARD Oh its one of those high-tech companies. I'm not too sure what they do. Where do you need to go to do these repairs? FLOW Where the phone lines enter the building. That's in the back right? SECURITY GUARD We'll find out. Seth looks to his side and slows down. INT. SERVER ROOM. Seth's head is visible peering through the window. INT. TYRELL WEB HOSTING HALLS. NIGHT. Seth walks two more seconds. SETH Ah shazbot. You're probably going to need someone to test the wire on the other side aren't ya? FLOW Yeah, that would help. Seth turns around to leave. SECURITY GUARD Where is he going? FLOW He's needs to test the line from outside the building. This way? Flow starts walking. SECURITY GUARD Yes. Seth is behind a wall and sees the two leave. He goes to the server room door. INT. SERVER ROOM. Seth clicks the door carefully. It opens. He slowly opens the door and looks all over the room. Apparently satisfied, he walks in and quietly closes the door. The room contains dozens of servers. Seth looks at the machines, and then at a nearby desk. He sifts through papers on the desk. Seth grabs his radio. SETH (whispering) Kerstin. KERSTIN (ear piercing) Are you done? Seth quickly lowers the volume. INT. TYRELL WEB HOSTING BACK ROOM. NIGHT. SECURITY GUARD What was that? FLOW Mmm? Hey shit.. can you pass me that screw driver right there? INT. SERVER ROOM. Seth is frozen, radio in hand. After a few seconds he starts to move. SETH (whispering) Kerstin, we have a problem here. There's all these servers here, but I don't know which one is ours. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. KERSTIN Fuck. INT. SERVER ROOM. Seth turns around. Close up of back of computer. Of NIC card with plugged in Ethernet cable. Of a wired 10+ port switch. SETH Okay I think I know what I'm going to do. Kerstin, can you ping the server continuously? INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. KERSTIN Yes, sure - why? Kerstin types at her computer. SETH (radio) I'm going to disconnect these servers one by one until I find ours. We see the ping response on Kerstin's screen. INT. SERVER ROOM. KERSTIN (radio) Okay. Seth moves to the first switch. His hands skim two orange wires that don't follow the others (that go to the computers.) He disconnects them. SETH Is the server still up? INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. Kerstin looks to her screen. KERSTIN Yes. SETH (radio) Alright. INT. TYRELL WEB HOSTING BACK ROOM. NIGHT. Flow is at it again. FLOW I'm going to need you to hold that other flashlight. SECURITY GUARD Oh come on. It's your business to be prepared. FLOW It's either this or bad service for a week. I know that wouldn't impress the guys who run this place. INT. SERVER ROOM. Seth reconnects the cable and moves on to the next switch. He pulls out the orange cable. SETH What about now? KERSTIN Yes, yes its down. SETH Okay Kerstin I'm just going to be pulling them all out now. You keep checking and let me know when that server goes down. KERSTIN (radio) Okay Seth. Seth pulls out the cables. One by one. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. Kerstin's screen: the server stops responding. KERSTIN Whoa whoa - the server is down. INT. SERVER ROOM. Seth plugs in the last cable he disconnected. SETH Is it back up? KERSTIN (radio) Hold on... No. Seth plugs in another cable. SETH What about now? KERSTIN (radio) Yes! It's back up. SETH Perfect. Seth follows the cable he just reconnected from the switch to a server. He takes the live distro hidden in his toolbelt and puts it in the server. He holds the power button down, which turns the machine off. He presses the button once more to restart it. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. SETH (radio) I'm restarting the server with the live distro. It's up to you now. Kerstin pings the machine. It comes back online. She starts up SSH and connects in on port 80. She mounts hda, goes to the /var/log/auth files for SSH, and cats them. She opens up an SFTP session and transfers the files. INT. SERVER ROOM. SETH Well? KERSTIN (radio) I'm in. It's going to take thirty seconds to transfer the files. SETH Hurry up. KERSTIN (radio) I'm only as fast as this connection Seth. Seth starts reconnecting the cables to the other computers. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. Kerstin's transfer finishes. KERSTIN Done. INT. SERVER ROOM. Seth grabs the live distro and reboots the machine via the power switch. He opens the door carefully, checking to see if anyone is out. EXT. WEB HOSTING BUILDING. NIGHT. Seth leaves the building quietly. He gives a thumbs up to i0, who reconnects the pairs. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. Seth climbs in. SETH You got the files? Kerstin nods. i0 climbs in, and puts his phone to his ear. INT. TYRELL WEB HOSTING BACK ROOM. NIGHT. Flow's pocket vibrates as he's working behind something. He takes out his phone and puts it back in his pocket. He pulls out a metal casing. FLOW See this? This is what was causing the outage. It was pressing against the lines. I guess someone must have bumped it. SECURITY GUARD That's all it took? FLOW You'd be amazed. Well, let your guys know that if they want a new cover on to call our office and we'll have someone come by. Okay? SECURITY GUARD I'll pass the message on. Is this it? FLOW Yep. I just got the message that the line cleared up after I pulled it off. We're done. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. The three can see Flow exit the building from across the road. The guard is at the door. EXT. WEB HOSTING BUILDING. NIGHT. SECURITY GUARD (shouting) Where's your vehicle? FLOW Just around the corner! The guard goes back in. Kerstin jumps in the driver's seat and drives the car off. EXT. INDUSTRIAL PARK. NIGHT. Flow's sedan stops. Kerstin jumps into the passenger side while Flow gets in the driver's seat. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. Flow drives off. FLOW A few more minutes, and I would have run out of things for that guard to do. Did you get the files? KERSTIN Yes, but didn't really get a chance to look at them. Kerstin pulls the laptop back on and issues a grep command. EXT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. Seth looks out the window. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. NIGHT. KERSTIN Good news guys, the bastard didn't wipe the logs after all. We have three IPs keep coming up for our hacker. One I recognize as the tea house. I don't know about the other two. Seth is already there, as is i0. Flow walks into the room. Kerstin looks up. KERSTIN I did a reverse DNS search on one of the mystery IPs. One traces back to another cafe. The other is a residential IP. That's probably where he lives. FLOW So we have that residential IP address. How do we go from that to getting the address of his home? SETH We have no choice - we'll have to do it the same way cops do: by asking his ISP. We'll have to lie a little bit, but that's not really an issue. FLOW Well let's do that first thing tomorrow. God knows we did enough for today. I'm beat guys. INT. CONFERENCE HALL. DAY. Caption ""A" Division Headquarters \\ Royal Canadian Mounted Police \\ Ottawa, Ontario, Canada." Kobar hangs up the phone. KOBAR Fucking hell. INT. BINARY PHUNKSTER'S HOME. DAY. SETH I hope he actually does call back. KERSTIN Think Flow and i0 are still sleeping? SETH Yeah. SENIOR RCMP OFFICER We would ask that if the public has information on either Sidney Arnott or Kerstin Holland-Moritz, to please approach the authorities. Yes - you? The Senior RCMP Officer points to a reporter in the audience. JOURNALIST #1 (offscreen) Do you know anything about their current whereabouts? SENIOR RCMP OFFICER Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, I cannot disclose that at this time. Yes? JOURNALIST #2 (offscreen) Could you elaborate on Sidney's apparent sex change? SENIOR RCMP OFFICER Interviews with family members indicated that she is  transgendered. Born with female anatomy, she presents herself as a male. Yes? He lives at 591 Bletchley Park street in Ottawa. You got that? Seth looks down, in distraction. SETH Darren Simcoe, 591 Bletchley Park street. Got it. Thanks. KOBAR (over the phone) This is the most I can and will do for you okay? Please don't call me back. There's a clicking sound from Kobar hanging up his phone. KERSTIN Sidney? SETH I am not having this discussion right now. Flow walks into the room. FLOW (stretching) Hey guys... INT. NEW RCMP OFFICE. DAY. Kevin is surfing on Seth's Facebook profile. Graham walks behind him and passes him a dossier. GRAHAM Word is they have sightings everywhere from Montreal to Vancouver. Finding anything? KEVIN I'm writing down the location of their friends as spots of interest. They may be hiding out at one of their places. INT. BINARY PHUNKSTER'S HOME. DAY. KERSTIN Are you crazy? They'll know we're here. SETH That's the plan. I want them to think we're here now, and not back home. EXT. CONVENIENCE STORE. DAY. Seth goes to the side of the building, takes out his cellphone, and turns it on. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. DAY. Kerstin gets back in the car. FLOW Where's Seth going? KERSTIN He'll be a minute. EXT. Seth puts the cellphone down. SETH (to himself) Cheschire Catalyst... (pause) TAP magazine. Tapped lines. Pretty clever Eric, but that's what I'm counting on. Seth hangs up. EXT. ERIC'S HOUSE. DAY. Eric looks at the phone and puts it down. INT. FLOW'S SEDAN. DAY. Seth comes by and climbs in. FLOW You're done doing whatever you were doing? SETH Yep. Let's go. EXT. TORONTO AIRPORT. Seth shakes their hands. KERSTIN Thank you both. For everything. FLOW Don't mention it. You take care of yourselves alright? SETH Will do. EXT. URBAN ROAD. DAY. Seth closes the door shut. Seth and Kerstin begin to walk down the road. Flow and i0 drive past. SETH Adios guys. INT. TORONTO BUS TERMINAL. DAY. Seth and Kerstin enter the bus terminal. SETH There's the machine. I'll buy the tickets. INT. TORONTO BUS TERMINAL CAFE. DAY. Kerstin is at a table with two hot chocolates in front of her. Seth comes by and sits down. He places two tickets to Ottawa on the table. KERSTIN Sorry, I should of asked you if you liked this. SETH I do. Thanks. INT. TORONTO BUS TERMINAL. DAY. Footage of people walking around. EXT. BUS TERMINAL. DAY. Seth walks past the baggage carrier to board the bus. INT. GREYHOUND BUS. Kerstin is sitting. Seth sits down beside her. KERSTIN So we have the hacker's address. What now? SETH I don't know. Go there maybe. See if he has a wireless network we can crack into, and get some proof. KERSTIN Oh Seth, we don't even know what we're looking for. And what if Kobar gave you the wrong address? SETH I know. But what else can we do? KERSTIN And we can't risk using public transportation anymore. We'll need a car Seth, and who is going to want to lend us one? SETH Jinks. INT. NEW RCMP OFFICE. DAY. Kevin is swivelling in his seat. GRAHAM What do they want from us? We pulled out everything there is to get from these computers. KEVIN Don't fret too much. The management is just getting antsy because of all the coverage. An officer walking in the hall peeks his head in. RCMP MAN #2 Did you guys catch the news? KEVIN No, what? RCMP MAN #2 The suspects announced last night on some bulletin board that unless we stop chasing them, they're going to erase all the data from the computers they've infected. The media is having a field day with this. GRAHAM You have got to be kidding me. EXT. GREYHOUND BUS. The bus zips past a car. INT. GREYHOUND BUS. KERSTIN But if we do that we'll have tampered with the only evidence that proves we're innocent. SETH That's true. Okay, so we go back to the plan of sniffing the hacker's wireless traffic. KERSTIN I really don't like this. I really don't like that the only thing we have on this guy is an address. SETH So if we find nothing we'll be no worse off than had we never left for Toronto. KERSTIN Except that now we're considered dangerous fugitives. Kerstin looks out. Brief pause. SETH So what got you into hacking? KERSTIN Sorry? SETH What got you into hacking? It's my attempt at trying to change the subject. KERSTIN My father got us a computer at home when I was nine. Television was banned in our house, but using a computer was okay. So I just started to use it everyday. SETH Yeah? KERSTIN Yeah. I would do stuff like making the computer faster by deleting files I thought were useless. That didn't work out so well. SETH What did your dad say? KERSTIN He wasn't around for that. I told my mother that the PC crashed  because of a virus. I guess I've had a thing for computers ever since. What about you? I've been meaning to ask - why are they calling you Sidney? SETH It's my birth name. Seth looks to Kerstin. She appears confused. SETH I'm transgendered Kerstin. KERSTIN You're trying to become a girl? SETH Not exactly. Okay so here's the Coles Notes version: I was born with a girl body. My birth name, the name my parents gave me, was Sidney. I was raised as a female. Good with me so far? KERSTIN I think so. SETH Alright. Now while I was growing up, I started to realize that what was up here (taps head) didn't match what was down there. I wasn't a girl. I was a man in a girl's body. When I realized that, my whole childhood suddenly made sense. That's when I began my transition. KERSTIN So your name isn't really Seth? SETH No, it is - and it has been for years. But I haven't done all the paperwork to change it legally, which is where they must be getting the Sidney from. KERSTIN I would have never known. SETH I know. It's not something I exactly advertise. INT. RCMP LUNCH ROOM. DAY. KEVIN Come again? RCMP WOMAN #2 They're in Toronto. Their debit cards were used this morning. Both of them. KEVIN But we traced that announcement back to this city - not there. They can't be both places at once. RCMP WOMAN #2 There could be a third hacker involved. An accomplice. KEVIN Have you seen Graham anywhere? I have to talk to him. INT. GREYHOUND BUS. Seth and Kerstin grab their bags and debark. INT. BUS TERMINAL. MAIN HALL. Seth and Kerstin walk towards the exit. STUDENT Seth! Seth Arnott! Seth froze with a scared look on his face. He looks around and motions Kerstin to exit. Seth rapidly walks towards the student. STUDENT Hey buddy, how ya doing? SETH Pretty good Alex. Not much happening. Where are you going? STUDENT Montreal. My uncle passed away. SETH I'm sorry to hear that. Listen Alex, we really have to go. The cab's waiting for us outside. STUDENT Okay buddy, see you next class. Seth nods. EXT. BUS TERMINAL. DAY. Seth walks out. Kerstin is hanging by the wall at the exit. SETH I thought he was a cop at first. I nearly shit my pants. INT. APPARTMENT COMPLEX - JINKS' FLOOR. Kerstin knocks on the door. Steps are heard. Jinks opens the door. SETH Hey Jinks. JINKS (unimpressed) What guys? SETH Can we borrow your car? Jinks gives a look of incredulity. JINKS Hold on a sec. You ditched me - when the whole god damn world was after you. I was with you, but you just took off, leaving me hanging. And now you want my help? Who do you think you are? KERSTIN We didn't want you to get caught. JINKS Oh sure, after you get in the car. I may not be a super hacker, but I'm not an idiot. SETH I'm sorry Jinks. Look, we almost have the hacker. We have his address. All we need is a lift to his place, and see if he's got a wireless network to crack into. We could really use your help. *I* could really use your help. JINKS You must really think I'm stupid. SETH Fair enough. Look we'll leave, just promise me you won't tell anyone we came by. Can you do that? Please? SETH (to Kerstin) Let's go. Jinks closes the door. Seth walks to the elevator. INT. JINKS' ENTRANCE. Jinks has his back to the front door. Brief pause. He turns around and swings the door open. INT. APPARTMENT COMPLEX - JINKS' FLOOR. Jinks looks down the hall to where Seth and Kerstin are. JINKS Hold on guys. You can use the car. I'll give you the keys. Seth and Kerstin walk back to his appartment. SETH Are you sure? Jinks comes back out with the keys. JINKS Yeah. Just take it, and you don't have to bring me along. I mean that's what caused the problem last time right? SETH To be honest Jinks, I could use all the friends in the world right now. You're more than welcome to come along. Jinks looks at Seth and Kerstin. He turns around. JINKS Really? SETH Yep. JINKS Then I'll be right back! KERSTIN Bring your laptop! SETH And a thumb drive! EXT. RESIDENTIAL STREET. DAY. Jinks' car drives down a residential area. INT. JINKS' CAR. Jinks is driving. JINKS Is it this street coming up? Seth looks at a map on his laptop. His GPS is enabled. SETH Yep. Turn right over here. Picking up on anything yet Kerstin? Kerstin is looking at her laptop screen. KERSTIN Oh yes. Tons of wireless networks everywhere. SETH We're looking for street address 591. JINKS I see it. It's there on the left. EXT. RESIDENTIAL STREET. DAY. Jinks pulls the car over to the side and stops. The Black Hat's house has an empty laneway. INT. JINKS' CAR. KERSTIN I'm detecting three wireless networks in this area. Two have encryption, one doesn't. I'm connecting to the unencrypted one now. Kerstin types a few keys on her laptop. KERSTIN This isn't our guy. He's using a different ISP than we saw the hacker use. SETH Let's connect to the other two networks. I'll take on the one called "default" if you take on the other? KERSTIN Sounds good. Hold on, I see a car. Jinks and Kerstin put down their screens. The car passes, and they bring their laptops back on their laps. SETH (to Jinks) Want to see how to crack the encryption of a wireless network in under two minutes? JINKS Yeah! Seth opens a terminal window and starts to play away with aircrack-ng. SETH The problem with this form of encryption is its not applied in a consistent fashion. Listen in long enough, and you can figure out the encryption key. JINKS But we don't have time to listen in. Someone will notice that we're here. SETH Smart man. I'm doing a replay attack to have the network respond to bogus data. There. And. Done. JINKS Wait, what? You just cracked it? SETH Yep. Kerstin, you in yours yet? KERSTIN Almost. Hold on. Seth is checking up hostnames of the computers, and exploring windows shares. SETH Same ISP, but the hostnames don't match up. I'm looking through the Windows shares... no password... This isn't our guy. Kerstin? KERSTIN Had to clone my MAC address, but I'm in now. This is not our hacker. his network is using the wrong ISP. SETH Shit. So none of these wireless networks are his. EXT. RESIDENTIAL STREET. DAY. Footage of the car from the hacker's house perspective. INT. JINKS' CAR. SETH I guess we have to break into the house. KERSTIN What?! Are you kidding me? SETH What else are we going to do? JINKS I don't see a car. Want me to knock just in case? SETH Sure. You do that and whatever happens next decides what we'll do. EXT. RESIDENTIAL STREET. DAY. Jinks gets out of the car. EXT. BLACK HAT'S HOUSE. DAY. Jinks approaches the house. He rings the doorbell. INT. JINKS' CAR. Seth is rummaging around from his seat, trying to find something. SETH Do you see Jinks' thumb drive anywhere? KERSTIN No I don't. Are you seriously going to break in? SETH I don't know what else to do. We're so close. Everything we need is in that house. KERSTIN If it's the right house. SETH If it's the right house. EXT. BLACK HAT'S HOUSE. DAY. Jinks knocks on the door. He looks back at the car. He gives the thumbs up to Seth. INT. JINKS' CAR. SETH Stay here and keep an eye out. Can I borrow your hair pin? Kerstin obliges. Seth grabs one of the diaper pins that kept his bag together. SETH Thanks. Seth exits the vehicle. EXT. BLACK HAT'S HOUSE. DAY. Seth bends Kerstin's hair pin into an L shape. He jabs the diaper pin in the lock and starts picking the lock. Seth stands upright. Jinks looks down. SETH Don't look. Make it seem like you're waiting for someone to answer. Seth briefly continues. There's the sound of a click. SETH Got it. Seth opens the door. INT. BLACK HAT'S ENTRANCE. DAY. Seth and Jinks walk in. There's the sound of a double beep. Seth looks to his side - there's a control panel for the home alarm system. The screen on the panel is counting down from thirty seconds. SETH Oh shit. JINKS Can you hack that? SETH No. We gotta move now. Find that computer! Seth goes out the front door. INT. JINKS' CAR. DAY. Kerstin looks to the house, and sees Seth run out waving his hands for her to leave. She jumps into the driver's seat and takes off. INT. BLACK HAT'S HOME. DAY. Seth re-enters, closing the door behind him. He moves room to room, trying to find a computer. SETH Have you found it?! JINKS (off camera) Not yet! INT. BLACK HAT'S ENTRANCE. DAY. The alarm's count-down reaches zero. The alarm starts to wail. INT. BLACK HAT'S HOME. DAY. Seth looks through shelves. JINKS (off camera) It's here! SETH Where are you? Seth goes into the hall. JINKS (off camera) Downstairs! SETH Where are the stairs? Seth heads to the kitchen. JINKS (off camera) By the kitchen! INT. BLACK HAT'S BASEMENT. DAY. Seth comes down the stairs. Alarm wailing. JINKS (off-camera)  In here! INT. BLACK HAT'S ROOM. DAY. Seth walks in. The books on assembly programming and shell coding are there. A dual-monitor system is setup with a cool screensaver. The alarm is still wailing. SETH This is our hacker! See if you can find his laptop anywhere! Seth goes to the computer screen which makes the wallpaper dissapear. The computer downloading some torrents. The wallpaper is a picture of an 18 year old girl. Seth loads up a terminal window. SETH Do you have the thumb drive? I need it! Jinks is looking around the room. JINKS Shit - it's in the car! I'll get it! SETH Forget about it! Seth tars up all the files in the home directory. He opens an FTP session in the terminal window through screen with a server. SETH Jinks?! JINKS (offscreen) Yeah? SETH We don't have time anymore. Get back to the car okay!? He PUTs the tarred and gzipped file up. He closes the terminal window. JINKS (offscreen) Alright! Don't take too long! Seth deletes the bash history. Seth takes one last look at the computer and leaves. EXT. BLACK HAT'S HOUSE. DAY. Seth closes the door. Police sirens are heard approaching. Kerstin isn't there. Jinks is walking down the street. Kerstin's car screeches around the corner. Seth runs and jumps in. INT. JINKS' CAR. Kerstin approaches Jinks down the street. He climbs in. KERSTIN Was it the right house? SETH Yeah, it was. We found the hacker's computer, but not the laptop he would of had at the tea house. Is that right Jinks? JINKS I didn't see it anywhere. SETH I copied the hacker's files and uploaded it to a server I knew would be safe. EXT. URBAN ROAD. DAY. KERSTIN (voice over) Where to now? INT. JINKS' CAR. DAY. SETH I don't know. We need somewhere where I can retrieve the data I uploaded. But we can't go back to my house, or to Eric's, or to Gabriel's, or to anyone else we know to do it. JINKS You could come to my place? SETH Yours is out of the picture too Jinks. The cops have hit Gab and Eric. You'd be next. JINKS Seth, we never hung out together and you turned me down whenever I wanted to do stuff. We go to the same school, but then again so do thirty thousand other people. The cops don't know I exist. Seth looks at Kerstin. SETH Come to think of it, there's not really anything to link us is there. Let's do it. Kerstin turns the car around. KERSTIN Jinks' place it is. INT. JINKS' APPARTMENT ENTRANCE. DAY. Seth, Kerstin, and Jinks walk into the appartment. Jinks' mother is not present. SETH Nice apartment. I like the art. JINKS You guys have never been here, eh? SETH No. I'm not just saying that though - I really like the looks. JINKS Thanks. It's nice to hear that. INT. JINKS' ROOM. DAY. JINKS Now I don't know about you guys, but I'm famished. KERSTIN I haven't had anything to eat since this morning. SETH Same. How about we order some takeout? My treat. EXT. BLACK HAT'S HOUSE. DAY. The Black Hat drives up to his house. A rent-a-cop is waiting outside of his car. The car has the "Home Alarm Systems" logo on its side. The Black Hat gets out of his vehicle. BLACK HAT Hi. The people from the alarm company called me. RENT-A-COP Alright. Do you want to see if anything is missing? INT. BLACK HAT'S ENTRANCE. DAY. The Black Hat walks inside the entrance and looks around. INT. BLACK HAT'S BASEMENT. DAY. The Black Hat goes down the stairs. INT. BLACK HAT'S ROOM. DAY. The Black Hat moves his mouse to deactivate the screensaver. He checks the screen - everything appears fine. EXT. BLACK HAT'S HOUSE. DAY. The Black Hat walks out. BLACK HAT Seems to all be here. INT. JINKS' ROOM. DAY. Open Chinese food containers are all over Jinks' room. Seth is chowing down some chicken fried rice as his laptop downloads the gzipped tar file from the server. SETH (mouth full of food) It's done downloading the files. Seth grabs a thumb drive from his side. He uses the cp command. The drive lights up. Seth tosses the drive over to Kerstin. KERSTIN You put the files on this? SETH Yeah. Seth picks up the food and recursively greps for the hash with their names using a python script. "search_files.py" "Enter the hex you're looking for." SETH You know that hash with my name in it he was using to frame us? I'm not seeing it anywhere in his files. I'm not seeing a copy of the worm. KERSTIN You didn't get all of the files right? He could have it somewhere else. Kerstin passes the thumb drive to Jinks. SETH I hope not. If we don't find anything with what we have, then we're going to be screwed big time. Kerstin is sifting through files. Its emails in Thunderbird. She loads it in her client. KERSTIN I've got his emails. Jinks looks up from his own screen. JINKS Oh? KERSTIN Yeah I just loaded them up in my own client. It's indexing now. The progress bar indicates that indexing is done. A slew of emails appear. KERSTIN Check out this one here – it's a receipt for a digital gold payment. JINKS Why have I heard of that before? KERSTIN It's what spammers and phishers like to use. Think of it as a Western Union for criminals. Leaves no trace. The US government's been trying to bust them on laundering charges for years. SETH He's selling botnet access for money? KERSTIN I don't know. It just says that some guy named null_cool transferred fifteen thousand dollars to him. I'll keep looking. INT. JINKS ROOM. DAY. Fast continuous footage of the youths pouring over their laptops, printing out documents, and eating chinese food. INT. JINKS' ROOM. DAY. Text printouts litter the room. JINKS Hey guys, I got something! Seth and Kerstin position themselves to see Jinks' monitor. JINKS Okay, so the payment to our hacker was sent by a guy named null_cool right? Jinks has a web browser open with multiple tabs. The open tab is a post on a freelance job website. JINKS So I did an Internet search for "null_cool", and guess what – the guy posted an ad on a freelance job site. Jinks clicks a link by the post to get to the member's profile. SETH Okay. JINKS If you look at the account, he has a bunch of contact details listed there - his email, his instant messenger user names, etc. So I started to look them up. Jinks clicks to activate another tab. JINKS I got nothing when I searched for his email address . But when I looked up one of his instant messenger user names, I got this. The page loads. It's a forum for Porsche enthusiasts. The thread, started by null_cool, shows off pictures of his Porsche. JINKS I translated it from its original Russian. Guess what? Mr. null_cool owns a Porsche. He says on the freelancer site that he's a software engineer. How many  programmers do you know who can afford a Porsche? In Russia? SETH Awesome Jinks. What was the job on the site for? Jinks clicks re-activates the tab with the freelancer site. JINKS Read it. The camera focuses in on the text. "I want to do forum posting up to 3000 as per the target keywords. Priority to the Higher Review and Low price. If you are in GAF then you can do but i will pay after completion of project..No escrow til you will not finish...." JINKS He put it in the "web promotions" category. KERSTIN In other words, spam. So this guy who outsources spamming work paid our hacker some fifteen thousand dollars. JINKS The guy who framed you gets money from a spammer? SETH Looks like it. Maybe he rents out the botnet so that it can be used  to spam people. He could make lots of money that way. Nice job Jinks. JINKS Thanks. Seth and Kerstin walk back to their laptops. EXT. JINKS APPARTMENT. SUNSET. Traffic outside of the appartment. INT. JINKS ROOM. SUNSET. KERSTIN Hey, have you guys ever heard of Avalanche Anti-Virus? Seth and Jinks shake their heads. KERSTIN I was looking through the other ads null_cool posted on the freelance website that Jinks found. The camera surfs over Kerstin's shoulder. KERSTIN The new ads don't say what he spams for, but the older ones do. It's for this anti-virus program. Seth Googles for "Avalanche Anti-Virus", and ends up on the site. He clicks on "About Us". There's a picture of a man by the Porsche seen on the forums. SETH Oh, shit. Check the "About Us" section. Recognize that Porsche? This null_cool guy isn't just any software engineer. He's the head honcho for an anti-virus company. KERSTIN Quick theory: an anti-virus company pays our hacker to get first dibs on the virus or whatever he uses to infect computers and make them part of the botnet. That way their anti-virus product can get rid of the infected computers before their competitors, giving them a marketing advantage. SETH Let me see if I can dig up more on this. Seth goes back to Google and looks at the other search results. They talk about Malware. SETH Guys, I don't think this is a legit anti-virus product. Take a look. Seth turns around his monitor to show Jinks and Kerstin. It's a site with malware removal instructions for Avalanche. There's a screenshot of someone's desktop. On the bottom right portion is a little window indicating that a virus had been detected on their computer. Seth points to it. SETH See that? It's a warning saying that there's a virus on the computer, and that if you want to remove it, that you need to buy Avalanche Anti-Virus for $60. Seth closes his laptop shut. SETH But there is no virus. It's a scam. The spammer paid our hacker to use the botnet so that he could put fake alerts on the infected computers. Seth gets up. SETH Think about it - our hacker infected hundreds of thousands of computers. The people who own them don't know they're infected. So now they all get a message that they have a virus, and to pony up $60 to Avalance to remove it. JINKS And if they pay that money, it doesn't actually disinfect the computer right? SETH No no, it just gets rid of that message. In six months, or three months, or whatever, they can do it all over again. KERSTIN Do we know any of this for sure? SETH Alright, well we know for sure that this Avalanche Anti-Virus company is a scam. We know that they need to put those fake virus warnings up in order to make money. We also know that a botnet is the best way to get crap like that onto a system, and that this company paid our hacker, who is related to a botnet. Yeah, I think we're good on that one. KERSTIN So how do we prove it to the RCMP? SETH We call the hacker. INT. NEW RCMP OFFICE. Graham and Kevin are working at their computers. A call comes in for their desk phone. Kevin answers. KEVIN Kevin... Alright... Uh huh... Ok. Kevin hangs up and turns to Graham. KEVIN Get your stuff. The suspects are calling their buddy through some Internet phone service. We need to help finish off the trace. INT. ERIC'S BASEMENT. NIGHT. ERIC So why are you calling? INT. JINKS ROOM. NIGHT. SETH Will you just stay on the line for me? We found the hacker, but we there to be some legit record of our conversation. Your line is Cheschire Catalysting right? KERSTIN (mouthing, silently) Cheschire Catalysting? Seth puts his hand on the microphone. SETH (whispering to Kerstin) It's my way of asking him if his line is still being tapped by the police. ERIC (on the phone) Yes. SETH Then that's all we need. You don't have to do anything, other than to just stay on the line. INT. ERIC'S BASEMENT. Eric bends his head down. ERIC Fine. INT. JINKS ROOM. NIGHT. Seth presses a button on his laptop to initiate a three-way call. He types in numbers. There are ringing tones. NENN (recording) Welcome to Nenn's Phreaking Awesome PBX! If you already know what you want to do, please enter the two digit extension followed by the pound key. Otherwise, press zero to listen to your options. Seth presses two digits followed by a pound key. The DTMF tones are audible to the audience. SETH (to Kerstin/Jinks) I'm going to change how my number shows up on the hacker's Caller ID, to make it look like its coming from Russia. NENN (recording) Please enter the number as you would like to appear on Caller ID. Seth enters an international number corresponding to Russia. The DTMF tones are audible. NENN (recording) Please enter which number you would like to call. Seth holds. SETH I can't do a Russian accent. Can you do a Russian accent? Kerstin shakes her head. SETH Jinks? I've heard you do wicked accents before. JINKS Oh no. I'm not doing this. I don't know the first thing about computer viruses. He's going to know I'm not the spammer who paid him. SETH Doesn't matter. All he has to do is acknowledge it exists. We only need a sentence where he uses the word 'botnet', okay? You can do this. Jinks motions his agitation to Seth. Seth enters a ten digit number and passes it to Jinks. Ring tones. A click. BLACK HAT (over the phone) Hello? INT. BLACK HAT'S BASEMENT. NIGHT. The Black Hat is by his computer. JINKS (over the phone) Heel-lo. BLACK HAT Yes? JINKS (over the phone) This is null_cool. I vant to talk botnet, and I- INT. JINKS ROOM. NIGHT. BLACK HAT (over the phone) Who?
