  • Common Sense vs. Lawyers

iPodSubwayMaps.com is a site that gives off bite-size pieces of subway system maps for people to use on their special iPod Photos/Nanos for free.

They just got a cease and desist letter from the authorities of the New York/San Fransisco subway operators. Why? Because the photos they used the maps are those that are given freely on the websites of both respective authorities.

Legally, iPodSubwayMaps is the one at fault here. But just because something is legally incorrect, does not mean that it is truly right or wrong. These maps were distributed on the net freely anyways. These maps helped people, and did not require anyone spending money to obtain them [iPodSubwayMaps is donation-based]. No one lost any money over this. No one lost… anything over this. In fact, it could be said that such a site helped both subway authorities in general.

Instead of sending a cease-and-desist letter, and removing someone that was helpful, why not just work with them? That’s whay common sense would dictate. But then, if people were suddenly to adopt such a sense of logic – lawyers would all suddenly whither away.

  • NOTICE – To those who sent me an email!

Three days ago, I wrote a new filter for Thunderbird (my email program). It’s job was supposed to delete this annoying Spam variant.

Unfortunately, on my first live test, it managed to wipe out every single incomming email. Among the deleted was one from a friend; but it could of included yours too.

I know 6 emails were deleted. I cannot retrieve them. If you sent me an email recently, and I haven’t replied, please send it again. My apologies for the mess.

The filter was supposed to delete any mail with “http://uk.geocities.com/”. Why, you may ask? Because in one day, I received 26 (!!) messages of spam linking to subdirectories of that domain. That’s in addition to all the other spam from previous days.

Why the filter also wiped out legit mail is unknown.

  • What if Windows Vista… was a car?

We’ve all heard about how Windows Vista will be shipped in countless flavours; presumably as a means by Microsoft to covertly suck more money out of the consumers. Well I wondered: what if Vista was a car?

    Windows Vista Editions:
Starter Edition: A car powered by a lawnmower engine.

Home Basic Edition: A car with a decent engine. No steering wheel.

Home Premium Edition: Decent car. Steering wheel. Sound system. No airbags.

Pro Edition: Good car. Airbags. No sound system.

Ultimate Pro Gazookle Super Edition: Car comes with airbags AND sound system! Mind you, that extra difference costs you your new house.
